It warns against gambling and drinking liquor without public scrutiny and calls for civic pride, property improvement, and active letters to promote a better community.
A soldier writes from a ship crossing mid ocean in July 1918, reporting good meals, no seasickness, and eagerness to know where they will land. He describes leaving the United States in a hurry, the lack of knowledge about final destination, and asks about folks back home while noting limited writing permissions.
A July 18 1918 letter from a soldier in France to his wife describes receiving her June 24 letter and others, expresses affection and status as “ok,” and notes being with the same group including Tucker.
Mary Hall of St Joseph Missouri receives a wartime update from W A Watson dated June 22 1918. He writes of returning from the front after exposure to shellfire and close danger about sixty yards from German forces. He mentions awaiting letters from home and sending love to family.
A young writer from Dillinger area reports being several hundred miles at sea. He notes YMCA papers are circulated to speed correspondence and that letters may reach friends about three weeks sooner once he crosses to the other side.
Charles F. Peters son of Mr and Mrs B F Peters born February 26 1892 west of the city grew to manhood. He spent time in the west and south then farmed. He enlisted April 10 1917 with Co K 18th Regiment of the Army and served at a camp before joining the unit in France.
Last Wednesday a Washington message announced the death of a serviceman killed in action on July 18. He leaves his father and five sisters Mrs. J. W. Brassfield Mrs. Barnie Lay Mrs. A. R. Austin Mrs. Grover Gable and Mrs. Charley Owens. Memorial services will be held at Hoover Cemetery Saturday morning conducted by Rev. J. F. Patton.
Teresia Ann Harrelson Jones born March 30 1858 in Sullivan County Missouri died July 27 1918 aged 60 years 3 months 27 days. She married Robert M Jones May 11 1873 and had ten children eight survive Francis Hoskins Caldwell Ark Sarah Lumsden Alberta Canada Ellis Jones Mollie Franklin John Jones Willard Jones Iva Hollon Cecil Jones. Luther Jones died 1911 at 29 and one child died in infancy. She joined the M E Church South at twelve and was a devoted mother. Funeral conducted by Rev J F Patton Browning, buried Deep Springs Cemetery.
The Fourth Liberty Loan campaign runs from September 28 to October 19. Its outcome will be watched in Europe, as it signals American support for the war. Every dollar supports soldiers and pressures the enemy, testing U S resolve and sacrifice alongside that of troops in Europe.

The Browning W Y C T U held its regular session on the first Friday in August at Mrs Emma Curtis’s country home. Mrs Catherine Wallace led devotions and officers for the coming year were elected: President Luke Wallace Vice President May Schrock Secretary Nell Williams Treasurer Permelia Mairs.
Albert N Russell son of Johnathon and Mrs Russell was born February 14 1878 in Taylor township Sullivan county Missouri. He married Nora Kilburn in 1892 and they had one son Burwin Lee Russell. He bought a Brookfield area farm about ten years ago and lived there. Converted to the church of Christ ten years ago, he died August 10 after typhoid fever and appendicitis postmortem. He leaves a wife a son two brothers and several sisters in Oregon California Arkansas Washington and Wisconsin. He was industrious and will be missed.
