Adventurer Bidwell Shaped California History and Politics
John Bidwell, a 19th century frontiersman born in 1819, moved from New York to Ohio to Missouri before joining the first emigrant train to California in 1841. He helped shape early California politics, agriculture, and infrastructure, including aiding Sutter, supporting the Bear Flag era, prospecting for gold, owning Rancho Chico, and serving as a state official and regent. He died in 1900, honored by a Rancho Chico gift to Chico.
