Thursday night featured the annual reading and spelling contests at the opera house. Ruth Moore won the grammars medal for best public reading while Hazel Fields claimed Mr Bolling’s medal for the second intermediate spelling prize.
The Linn County Farmers Association hosts a county wide corn show with events in Browning Linneus Marceline Meadville Bucklin Laclede and Brookfield culminating in a Brookfield final. Premiums exceed 1200 dollars with separate judging for boys under sixteen young men sixteen to twenty and men. Missouri Score Card used and licensed judges for all corn. Agricultural meetings follow with national speakers at the county gathering. Adjacent counties may enter under forthcoming rules.
Mesdames R. D. Cassity and Wm. Belsher of Purdin bore visitors here Saturday.
Last Wednesday night the Green farm barn burned destroying five calves and a horse. Mr. Green freed seven calves and a horse, two calves perished, and an adjacent implement building with machinery and about five hundred bushels of corn were damaged. Total losses near $1,000 with $500 insured.
Notice announces Browning Savings Bank annual shareholder meeting to elect a Board of Directors for the coming year. The meeting is at the Banking House Browning Mo on Tuesday May 9 1911 at 9 o clock in the morning. B D Bolling president F R Duncan secretary.
A letter from Uncle Reuben complains about the economy in Washington. He says the new Democratic Congress harmed federal jobs to save pay, leaving lawmakers with fewer positions and clerks affected by the payroll cuts.
A letter criticizes Congress mileage allowances proposing abolition and urges clerks to cut perks. It mocks moving Pennsylvania Avenue to electric lights to spotlight saloons and the rowdy night life, ending with a jab at urban neglect and Reuben Hardscrabble.
The public school will hold graduation exercises at the opera house on Friday night April 21. Graduates include Miss Flo Hunter Miss Nevis Harvey and C B Fleming. They are praised as bright and studious and the program is described as excellent. Citizens are invited to attend.
