A domestic meditation urges kindness at home and in public life. It contrasts gentle, cheerful behavior with petty critiques and warns parents to model self control and temperance. It also contrasts an imagined peaceful upbringing with grim wartime visions and a vow to honor national symbols.
A young Army City correspondent shares an anonymous poem praising the Kaiser’s downfall. The speaker vows to let the Kaiser live as long as Belgian tears flow and the battlefield rot stains a luxurious bed with blood and bones covering him.
Aanted discussion of the third Liberty Loan introduces the yellow card system for well off investors who refuse to aid the war effort. Officials warn that a marshal may visit, and urges prompt liberal subscriptions to avoid penalties or higher taxes later. The message equates refusing loans to government taxation.
Dear parents, sister and brother write from April 7 1918 about receiving news of Dan being sent to the Great Lakes for training. The writer compares the journey to coast to coast travel and notes Illinois boys also sent elsewhere, describing the homeward feel of being out west.
Orvis Kenneth Vincent reports from San Francisco Naval training station detailing travel from St Louis to Oakland, then by boat to the camp. Mary E Hopson born May 25 1857 in Camp Point Illinois moved to Missouri in 1865 married James P Turner on July 4 1876 was a devoted member of Parson Creek Baptist Church. She died after an accident Friday evening funeral conducted by Rev J W Drinkard at Mt Olive cemetery with many mourners and sympathy for James Turner.
A World War I letter from a serviceman arriving in France on March 20, 1918 describes being in an AEF hospital since discharge from the ship. He mentions ear trouble and rheuma to parents, with hopes of their good health and a timely letter in return.
Missouri's senior senator William Joel Stone died in Washington after a second paralysis attack. Born May 7 1848 in Madison County Kentucky he studied law at Columbia and Missouri. A leading public servant he served as governor from 1892 to 1896 and was a U S senator from 1903 until his death. his body was brought to Nevada Missouri for burial.
Red Cross chapters state all memberships expire December 31 regardless of join date. Only those who joined during the Christmas drive are current members. Members may wear the Red Cross button and display the Service Flag. renewals encouraged and new names welcomed. Mrs. L. W. Hummel, Sec’y.
The Browning Savings Bank will hold its annual stockholders meeting at the banking house in Missouri on May 14, 1918. The session begins at 9 o clock a m and will last at least three hours. The purpose is to elect six directors for the ensuing year and to transact any other proper business.
