Ninth annual Terry County Harvest Festival on Thursday

Tally shows Cade leading with 198 000 Gorby 153 000 and Cornelius 66 400 as Brownfield hosts the ninth harvest festival. The Thursday program features an 11 am parade with 83 units, preceding a jet air show. Ted Weems and his orchestra and other acts perform at Cub Stadium after the parade, with queen announced and prizes drawn later in the day.

Portwood’s car season opens with local events and road work updates

Community notices report a new city ordinance allowing police to arrest trespassers amid a summer spike in window peeping calls. Portwood’s hosts a car season kickoff with Bil Green and Ford lore, while traffic changes at Levelland Y include 97 signs and proposed bidirectional flow. Cub boosters meet at the Fire Station for coffee. Capt Doleach will visit Friday to discuss the U S Air Force Academy cadet program. Failure to Stop Endangers School Children, Mayor Warns

Mayor C C Primm warned drivers that failing to stop for school buses will result in tickets and fines. Rotary bus driver D S Donaldson reported two near misses in two weeks on 8th Street and Reppto as over 200 first and second graders ride the bus daily. Parents demand protection and assurances.

City Safety Plan to Slow Traffic

City Manager Eunice Jones announced a safety campaign to support the Police Department during the school year. Thirty observers will monitor traffic and handle complaints about reckless driving speeding bag racing and other violations. They aim to augment law enforcement with citizen help though not replacing officers.

Man Missing Since Sunday Evening on South Plains

Sheriff Chick Lee said law enforcement on the South Plains are alert for Marvin Parker of Brownfield who has been missing since Sunday afternoon. Parker called his wife about 2 p.m. Sunday from the Parker Meat company office saying he would be home for lunch. The wife reported him missing Sunday evening with about 150 dollars on his person. His mud splattered car was found parked in front of his office Monday morning.

Governor appoints Burton Hackney to Public Welfare Board

Governor Allan Shivers announced the appointment of Burton G. Hackney, a Brownfield attorney, to the State Board of Public Welfare. He will replace Hubert T. Johnson of Waco for a term ending January 20, 1961. Hackney studied at Texas Tech and passed the bar in June 1934.

Burglaries And Wrecks Reported In Week

The sheriff's department investigated a burglary of 138.36 in checks and cash at the Texaco Station owned by Ralph Cadjew at 322 South First. The entry broke a back window. The Highway Patrol investigated two traffic accidents causing about 200 in damage to a pickup and demolished an automobile. Driver Robert Black was en route toward Brownfield near the city limits.

Cotton Harvest Gins 125 Bales This Week

Aubrey T Jones of the Texas Employment Commission reports 125 bales ginned so far, with 16 at Terry and six at Yoakum County gins. He says totals will be broken down by county. A. B. Cornett joins TEC to assist Terry county farmers in obtaining native Mexican labor for harvests through October.

Farm Bureau Resolutions Meeting Set for Oct 6 at Court House

Terry County Farm Bureau urges all members to attend the October 6 session in the county courthouse starting at 8 a.m. Former members will discuss resolutions to be adopted at the annual meeting October 21 in Dallas. A kick-off supper for members participating in the drive is planned October 10 at Nick’s Case.

Brownfield Leaders Set for Regional Education Conference

Brownfield will be represented at the regional Texas Conference on Education in Slaton Junior High Lubbock. Supt O R Douglas says representatives and any others may attend the Tuesday session starting at 4 PM. Burton Hackney and Curtis Sterling will moderate two of seven sections on school finance adult education and other educational topics.

Terry County United Fund Names Officers and Plans Drive

Ike Bailey was elected president of the Terry County United Fund Board at an organizational meeting. Officers include vice presidents J C Powell and Herman Wheatley, secretary Mrs Fred Yandel, and treasurer John Kendrick. Budget chair Curtis Sterling and other committees were named. A three member committee will select a campaign chairman with first drive planned for November. The fund emphasizes local control and channels all gifts to one drive.
