Dr Harlan Willis Reminder of Dedication to Mission Work

In a talk to the Methodist Men Dr Harlan Willis a missionary physician shared insights from a year in Thailand He spoke of language study daily life amid turmoil and the need for genuine care for the Thai people He contrasted such dedication with missile deterrents and urged more human effort to counter communism.

Brownfield Student Speaks on Freedom at Optimist Club

Brownfield High School student Mike Paddack addressed about 18 Optimist Club members in the Flame Room of Pioneer Natural Gas Co. He defended the Constitution, warned against communism, and cited methods used to spread its influence, noting apathy among listeners.

Busy Agenda Reviewed During Council Meeting

The Brownfield council tackled theft and burglary updates from Terry County and Brownfield agencies. Investigations covered radiator and carburetor thefts, a Cal Texas service station burglary, and a steel piece theft from Goodpasture Manufacturing, with several arrests and a zoning change approved.

Zoning Change Allows Duplex Near High School

The council approved changing seven half blocks east of the high school to a C-1 zone to permit a duplex. No protests were filed. An outstanding lien of over $400 was accepted to close the debt. City attorney Joe McGowan said the city is not responsible for sealing off dirt at 720 West Broadway sidewalk. Mrs. Mary Howell’s appeal of a jury award of 1561.50 for a 106 foot right of way will go to county court with a claim of 3500. The League Conference set for October 4-6 in Dallas will be attended by several members. Mayor E. Ross led the meeting with three aldermen present. Also present were McGowan, Jake Geron, Eunice Jones.

Terry County Farm Bureau to Vote on Corporate Name Change and Resolutions

Weldon Mason announces Terry County Farm Bureau Annual Convention in Brownfield High School Auditorium on October 10. Members will vote on changing the corporation name to a perpetual form and approve resolutions on stray dogs litter law welfare education water conservation and anti corruption with ballots due by September 30.

School Trustees Meeting Monday at 7:30

The local School Board of Trustees will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the high school. The agenda includes a curriculum report, two personnel changes, enrollment and business reports, unfinished correspondence, and a student council homecoming bonfire request. President Paul Farrar will preside.

Governor John Connally proclaims September 20 to 26 as Young Farmer and Young Homemaker Week in Texas. The notice highlights education civic service leadership and recreation by members aged 18 to 35 with thousands expected at area award banquets and large-scale participation.

Young Farmers Hear New man on defoliants in Ag Building

Terry County Young Farmers heard Shelby Newman of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in Lubbock speak on defoliation methods timing economics and test findings during their regular meeting at Brownfield High School. The group of 29 members and guests also planned the Terry County Junior Livestock Show in March with Jerry Keesee and O D Hearn as general superintendents and Leroy Barrer as swine superintendent assisted by Donaldson Virgil Gilliam.
