Cubs Football Season Opens With Estacado at Cub Stadium

Council Holds Its First Meet In New Quarters

Brownfield City Council met in the new City Council Room for a two and a half hour session. The room is located where the police department was before remodeling City Hall. Present were council members with city manager Jake Geron, city secretary Zelma Miller, city attorney Joe McGowan, and Lewis Simmonds.

Harvest Festival Parade Entries Callins and Queen Contest

Robert Levo, parade committee chairman, invites last year entrants to return for the Harvest Festival parade on Oct. 4 and asks new groups to call the Chamber office at 637-3538 with float counts. Co chairman Gerald Hamilton helps plan color guard, officials’ convertibles, bands and parade route. Floats judged in civic, industrial and commercial classes with prizes of 75 and 25 dollars. Queen candidates include Phyliss Suggs and eight others from local clubs. Old Fiddlers Contest offers cash prizes. City Hall remodeling and open house plans loom as council weighs enforcement of an aging dog control ordinance.

PCG Wills Directors Vote in Terry County Election

Terry County cotton producers and cotton businessmen, including John Lau and Keith Vandiver of Brownfield, will elect a business man director to Plains Cotton Growers Inc for a two year term. The meeting is Sept 15 at 8 pm in the Farm Bureau Building directors’ room.

Cotton Producers Committees Face New Directors

At the meeting Ball and Vandivere outlined that businessmen directors are elected in odd years and producer directors in even years for two year terms. They said the session would discuss the current legislative situation affecting cotton and PCG’s role and activities for High Plains Cotton. Directors determine PCG policy on legislation research promotion finances and other crucial issues.

Raps Reduction In Oil Depletion By Farm Bureau

Texas Farm Bureau says cutting the oil depletion allowance from 27.5 to 20 percent will raise farmers production costs and fuel a cost price squeeze. President Sidney Dean urged Texas lawmakers to oppose the change as it raises consumer oil prices and boosts import competition.

Golden Gloves Returns Through Evening Lions

The Evening Lions Club sponsors Brownfield’s first Golden Gloves amateur boxing program in over 30 years as part of the Lubbock Region. Adult Education Classes Offered at Brownfield Schools

Brownfield Public Schools will offer three levels of adult education this year. Registration begins at 5 p.m. on Sept. 16 at Brownfield High School. Level one serves those who did not finish fourth grade. level two, those who finished fourth but not ninth grade. level three, those who finished eighth but not high school. The third level prepares students for the GED tests, with TEA certificates recognized by colleges and businesses as a high school diploma. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. when not observing holidays.

UF Names Committee Members of Budget and Admissions Panel

The Terry County United Fund names Arlie Lawrimore as chairman of the Budget and Admissions committee with Harold Klein Thomas Zorns Bobby Thomson Ike Bailey John Kendrick Marion Snell Robert Levo and Mike Hoss as assistants. The panel will meet September 16 and the board meets September 24 to approve the budget and set the kickoff date. General fund chairman is W. A. Smithh Leigen with division chiefs L. G. Smith C. G. County Set to Hear Herbicide Act Proposal

Terry County Commissioners called a county-wide meeting for Tuesday evening in the District Court room to decide if Terry County should be placed under the Herbicide Act. A public hearing is required, following a prior sparsely attended session in August. County Judge J. McKinney urged strong farmer turnout to guide the decision.
