Directors of the Terry County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture voted to back the Babe Ruth State Tournament at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. Joe Stephens, state director for the Babe Ruth League, attended to request the support and outline plans.
Water, Inc will form county units in at least five West Texas counties during September to expand the nonprofit’s membership and broaden participation. Meetings are set in Levelland Brownfield Spearman Lamesa and Stratford. two existing county associations have already joined.
The proclamation urges citizens to buy 100 percent cotton and join the cotton industry in promoting a strong economy. County Judge W. T. McKinney proclaims September 4 through 11 as Cotton Week, honoring cotton's essential role in the economy and calling for tribute to the industry.
Terry County Young Farmers will host the annual Awards Banquet at 5 30 p m Saturday Sept 6 at the Holiday House Tickets to attend are $2 59 each and may be purchased from Merlin Speed Herman Wheatley Jr or Mr and Mrs Truman Bridges The event will name the Star Young Farmer and present the Distinguished Service Award.
Masso's Department Store announces a store wide sale starting 9 a.m. Friday to clear stock for a remodeling project. Owner Joe Masso says the plan lowers ceilings installs new fixtures and air conditioning and redoes the floor and layout to improve the shopping experience. A grand opening will follow the remodeling with additional merchandise.
Registration set for Thursday Sept 18 from 8 to 9 p m at Brownfield High School. Classes begin Tuesday Sept 23 with three levels for non graduates up to eighth grade. After 25 days of 90s and 100s, Brownfield and Terry County saw rain on August 24 25 totaling 3.17 inches for the month. Weatherman Lewis Simmonds notes the month ended with cooler temperatures in the low eighties to high seventies and moisture added to the year total reaching 16.78 inches.
A series of seven meetings this week on the grain referendum before the October vote explains the issue to Terry County producers. Local officials urge attendance to understand the referendum and its impact on farming communities.
Dr. Bill Black of Texas A M University will headline meetings as the referendum seeks voter approval for a five cent per ton assessment at first sale. A 12 member governing board will be chosen to direct research promotion and education funds, with funds not used for politics and refunds available within 69 days. Ballots go to grain producers in early October across 29 counties.

The U S Department of Agriculture and the Consumer and Marketing Service announce a Sept 8–12 Cotton Classing Orientation at the Lubbock Cotton Classing Office. Hours are 9 a m to 4 p m daily, open house for producers ginners and interested persons with tours and classes in grading and stapling.
Brownfield General Hospital begins typing blood today for all Terry County citizens aged 18 to 65. The effort, sponsored by the Brownfield Jaycees with local banks, aims to create a walking blood bank for emergencies and special blood types.
Four Terry County 4-H youths Gary Eicke Pat Green Larry Mason and Steve Mason joined John Newburn assistant county agent at the Southwestern Angus Field Day in Seminole on August 30. Sponsors were Markham Angus Farm and Flippo Angus Farm. Terry County led the cattle judging contest with a 416 of 450. The group will compete in swine judging at the ABC Home Farm Field Day in Hamilton on September 6.
