Football Throw Contest Slated for Local Boys Club

Local Jaycees and the Brownfield Boys Club sponsor a football throwing contest for Boys Club members ages eight through twenty. Events run 10 a.m. at Brownfield High School east practice field across four age groups. Nationally sanctioned event awards go to top scorers with scores later submitted for regional and national honors.

Brownfield Tractor Burglarized Sunday

Local authorities probe a burglary at Brownfield Tractor with 10 cases of Treflon stolen at 102 dollars per case after 4 p.m. Sunday. Separate incidents include vandalism at Challis Church, a tire theft from a 1962 Chevrolet in a hospital lot, purse theft, a power drill theft at Blevins Laundry, prowlers on Tohoka Road, and multiple drunkenness arrests with fines and costs.

Brownfield School Board reviews October attendance and budget

The Brownfield Independent School District board met in regular session at Brownfield High School. Dr. E. B. Posey reported October attendance averaged 96 percent of a 3,212 enrollment, a drop of 159 from last year, with American Education Week visits totaling 225 at the high school and 300 at junior high. The board set a March 1 1967 deadline for the textbook committee to report, discussed new hires including speech therapist Janice Anderson, and reviewed finances showing 17.7 percent of the year's budget spent by October with meal service down from last year. Tax collection stood at 68.5 percent and 152 tax related cases were filed or handled, while the old post office building purchase remained under discussion until January.

Cancer Picture in Terry County Shows Local Progress

A government report by the U S Public Health Service notes Terry County shows lower cancer mortality than many U S regions while overall national figures remain high. The Tokyo International Cancer Congress reported 4,000 researchers from 60 countries. If deaths had not risen five years ago mortality would appear brighter. Smoking links cited though reduction is uneven across ages.

Rites Held For H. N. Wess Key

Funeral services for H. N. Wess Key 82 were held at Calvary Baptist Church with ministers from Gomez Baptist Brownfield and Abilene officiating. Burial followed at Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Key died after a long illness in Brownfield General Hospital. He farmed Gomez community until 1961 and was a deacon. survivors include his wife four daughters two brothers a sister six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
