Area cotton producers seek rain for spring planting

Citizens urged to call with tips as Brownfield Crime Information Inc offers 300 dollars for information leading to arrest and indictment in burglaries at Sonny's Feed and Supply and Petro Log. USDA official tours West Texas farming issues luncheon

District Conservationist Duane Moss and Terry County SWCD members hosted Richard D. Siegel deputy assistant Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment at a First Christian Church luncheon. The group discussed West Texas farm problems and opportunities during a fact finding visit to the semi arid region with about 16.7 inches of rainfall annually.

Terry ACS chapter hits goal in 1983 drive fund drive success

The Terry County Chapter of the American Cancer Society reports surpassing its 8000 goal for 1983. Residential efforts raised 4600 toward a 4000 target while the business drive totaled 3500 of 4000, with A J Phillips as chairman. The milestone was announced at a recent officers meeting at K B Bos Restaurant. Separately, Moss discussed soil conservation and crop mix in Terry County, noting cotton, grain sorghum, and native rangeland, plus water table and wind erosion concerns. He described terrace building and strip cropping as soil protection measures. The Cancer Society golf tournament is set for June 4-5 at Brownfield Country Club, entry 85 per team, with proceeds to cancer research.

Rape suspect arrested after Handy Hut incident

Brownfield man Joe Hernandez Sanchez, 26, is jailed in Terry County on aggravated rape charges after an early Friday morning confrontation at Handy Hut Convenience Store. Police say he forced the female attendant at gunpoint and was captured after attempting to flee as officers arrived. The victim was taken to Brownfield Regional Medical Center.
