Spirit of the Plains Band Banquet Honors Brownfield Students

The Brownfield High School Spirit of the Plains band banquet celebrated a banner year as the band, a UIL Sweepstakes recipient five times in six years, honored members and leaders. Cheryl Flowers received the John Philip Sousa Award. Lisa Davis and Joe Shannon were named outstanding senior girl and boy, with Danny Melcher as outstanding junior, Johnnie Roe as outstanding sophomore, and Paul Porter as outstanding freshman. Debbie Davis and Danny Melcher also received the Fred Smith Award for leadership.

Commissioners Approve 1000 for Terry County Fair and Bank as Depositor

In a brief Terry County Commissioners meeting on Monday, a 1000 allocation for the Terry County Fair was approved and the First National Bank of Brownfield named county depositor. The request came from Terry County Fair Committee members Bob Mayfield Naomi Tongate and Kermitt Shults, who noted the fair is held in the National Guard Armory during Harvest Festival. They hoped for eventual charter independence from the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce.

Graduation Exercises From Terry County Area

Graduation activities wrap up for 152 Terry County students and 37 Plains graduates. Meadow High School and Christian Center Academy held ceremonies last week with valedictorian and salutatory speakers. Plains and Brownfield districts plan ceremonies this weekend with processions, addresses, and diplomas.

The VFW and American Legion Posts in Brownfield with their auxiliaries schedule a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at the American Legion Post Home. Gold Star mothers will be honored by the auxiliaries. Open to the public with coffee and rolls after the ceremony.

Country Caravan 1983 lands in Meadow Friday night

South Plains College presents Country Caravan 1983 a traveling country show at Meadow city park Friday at 8 p m featuring about 50 songs with 75 percent on current country charts in a Grand Ole Opry style. The tour continues to Brownfield on June 18.
