The annual clean-up paint-up fix-up week begins Monday May 30 in Brownfield with several local organizations sponsoring designated areas and activities to improve the town’s surroundings.

Brownfield city council boosts the property tax from 95 cents to $1.20 per $100 valuation, with five cents for park funding. The raise follows a $249,900 bond election in October 1954 to widen U S Highway 62, and a $214,404.70 paving contract was let to Baker Neill and Haner Inc for about 65 blocks. Construction starts in about two months after bidding as high as $301,171.
Fire department answered four alarms this week with three false calls. A real car fire occurred in a boxcar near Gulf Wholesale, delaying traffic and threatening nearby gasoline tanks. Additional mistaken alarms reported houses and fences burning but were unfounded.
A Sales Management survey finds Terry county residents with 44.4 percent of families earning 4000 dollars or more after tax, higher than regional and Texas levels. Brownfield shows 2800 families with near 5000 dollar per unit income and a 135 quality index, ranking among top Texas towns for purchasing power.
June 25 marks a nationwide referendum for Terry wheat farmers to decide if marketing quotas will continue for the 1956 crop. The County ASC urges eligible producers to vote, with two-thirds needed for quotas to take effect. Ezra Benson notes the wheat surplus and domestic export needs for two years.
Honolulu Oil Corp announces two new drilling sites in Terry county while Phillips Petroleum reports a test outcome at No 1-A Day in the Terryton Glorieta field. A 24 hour pump test yielded 109 barrels of oil and 47 barrels of water with a small gas oil ratio, as swabbings alternated oil and water.
J W Lansing 74 a Brownfield farmer was crushed to death when his tractor flipped on the J B Mackey farm nine miles north of Brownfield. The body was found by a farm hand at 2 15 p m and sheriff notified. He leaves a wife three sons two daughters a brother and two sisters and many grandchildren. Funeral at Crescent Hill Church of Christ with Rev John McCoy officiating.
The YMCA starts its summer recreation program on Wednesday with Director R T Wilson seeking volunteer instructors for golf archery arts crafts and tennis due to large enrollment. About 170 youngsters signed up at Saturdays Regal theatre round up with activity interest listed for golf volleyball archery art crafts tennis photography radio and folk games.
The best Brownie Girl Scout Boy Scout troop in the June 9 Rodeo Parade will win free passes for each member, announced by Leo Holmes. Civic and ladies club float entries also earn passes. Parade forms on West Main at the depot, travels Broad Street to Lubbock Road then Main, ending at the railroad. Ten entries have signed up to participate and attend the opening night show.
