GTE to Impose Monthly Line Charge Starting June 1

General Telephone and other nationwide providers will begin a $1 per month subscriber line charge for residential customers on June 1, with business customers on multi-line plans having paid $6 since May 1984. The plan shifts costs from long distance to local services, and may trigger interstate rate reductions such as AT&T's 5.6 percent cut.

Terry County Ambulance Report Highlights April Activity

Terry County Commissioners approved the Brownfield Ambulance report for April noting 53 runs including 17 emergencies and 36 transfers. There were 28 runs in Brownfield, seven in Terry County, and 18 outside. Expenditures totaled 9536 with 6043 in fees and 44037 in collections, a 66.70 percent collection rate.

Cubs Lose Bi-District Baseball Game to Alpine

The Brownfield Cubs finished 1985 with an 11 4 defeat to Alpine in Pecos, trailing 4 1 after four innings as Alpine scored three in the fourth and six in the fifth. Brownfield ends 14 10 with six hits led by Tony Garcia, while Martin Fonseca took the loss, relieved by Garcia and Junior Garcia.

Brownfield ISDoffers Summer Bilingual Language Program

Brownfield Independent School District announces a free eight week bilingual language program for kindergarten and first grade students who will enter school in fall 1985. Tests determine eligibility. Colonial Heights and Oak Grove prekindergarten and kindergarten students already tested. Program runs June 24 through August 16, 9 to 12 at Colonial Heights Elementary. May rainfall soaks Terry County amid scattered hail

Daily rainfall totals show 3.31 inches in the city since May 17, more than the entire 1985 year to date. Brownfield totals include 0.19, 0.40, 0.22, 0.85, 0.79, and 0.86 inches from May 17 to May 23. SCS reports indicate May rain covered most of the county with two to five inches in the past week, noting heavy hits west of Wellman and around Union, Meadow areas, and northeast of Meadow. One farmer near Wellman reported a field baled out, with scattered hail but no serious damage.

United Way to Sponsor Summer Track Program

The Terry County United Way will sponsor a free three week summer track program for local boys and girls starting June 3 at Cub Stadium. James Morris, South Plains College head track coach, will oversee activities and instruction.

Memorial Holiday schedule reviewed by Brownfield notices

A large portion of Brownfield will close Monday for Memorial Day with government offices including City Hall Terry County Courthouse and the U S Post Office shut and many local businesses closing. Some shops will remain open with limited hours while others announce special hours for the holiday.
