Brownfield council weighs landfill prep and EPA extension

Brownfield councilmen discuss starting new landfill procedures while meeting TWC mandates. An Oct 9 deadline set by the water commission precedes excavation of 4.7 acres, but city manager Dick Fletcher says it cannot be completed in time. He estimates needing four to six scrapers and 16 hour days six days a week to meet the deadline, and a six month extension from EPA would help. EPA extension could spark lawsuits from big trash firms, while not extending would push plans to excavate only one acre by Oct 9. Landfill rates run about 36 to 38 dollars. See Landfill.page 4.
