Brownfield High School Spirit of the Plains Band held its Fiesta Days banquet in the high school commons drawing more than 300 people. Band President Noel Garcia welcomed attendees as Byron Ivy received the Director's Award and Michael Kennedy earned the John Philip Sousa Award with a $300 scholarship. L J Richardson honored for 50 years in banking by Texas Bankers Assn
L J Richardson a West Texas banker received the Fifty Year Banker Award at the 109th Annual TBA Convention luncheon. He began as a bookkeeper in 1941 at First National Bank of Post, served 37 months in WWII with the 11th Air Force, and rose to CEO and chairman at the Brownfield First National Bank. He has held multiple community roles in Terry County and Brownfield, including mayor pro tem, library board member, and Red Cross treasurer.

Shonda Haston and Melissa Dawn Cornelius were named valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 1993 at Wellman High School. Haston carried a 96.64 GPA and held leadership roles in Spanish Club FHA National Honor Society and Who's Who among American High School Students. Area high schools begin graduation exercises with Meadow and Plains wrapping up at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, at Wellman High School. Meadow lists valedictorian Jennifer Osborn and salutatorian Cody Andrews leading 13 seniors, while Plains has valedictorian Keri Wylene Powell and salutatorian Betsy Carol Blair for 31 graduates. Brownfield High and Union High host ceremonies the same week, Brownfield led by valedictorian Becky Brisendine and salutatorian Lynsey Hargrave for 114 graduates, and Union led by Lupe Herrera and Barbara Gonzales for two graduates at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 28.
