Wellman's valedictorian is Christine Hartman daughter of a local family. The announcement highlights her academic excellence and plans after graduation.
Brownfield Independent School District approved the resignation of Deane Wright, athletic director and head football coach, after nearly four hours in executive session. Wright, 55, will receive regular pay through June 30 plus 20000 and keep a 1980 Ford. he must vacate duties immediately. Wright came from Canyon in 1982. Brownfield teams went 0-10 during his tenure. Andrews cited best interests of the district and would not reveal reasons. A board meeting is planned to appoint a new athletic director and head coach, with basketball coaching on the agenda.
By Lynn Brisendine the Desiderata dated 1692 was found at Old Saint Paul’s Church in Baltimore. The famous verse advises calm amid noise, peace in silence, speaking truth quietly, avoiding loud people, finding value in self and work, and pursuing virtue in a changing world.
Wellman High School honors Christine Hartman as valedictorian and Rhonda Dill as salutatorian for the 1984 graduating class. Hartman led the class with top grades while Dill earned high ranking and recognition from the faculty for academic achievement.
Brownfield Girls' Little Dribblers White squad swept four opponents at the BMS Gym to claim the regional title and earn a trip to the state meet in Dalhart on May 30. Judy Lynn Collins led scoring with nine points, Cindy Acosta added six, and Heather McVay contributed, as Brownfield defeated Denver City and Littlefield.
Spirit of Plains at Brownfield High School celebrated a standout year at the Annual BHS Band Banquet with 400 attendees. The group earned a UIL Sweepstakes Award for the fifth time in six years and the Outstanding Band Award at the Smokey Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg Tennessee. Todd Chambers and Danny Melcher received top honors. Melcher won the John Philip Sousa National Band Award and Chambers the Fred Smith Band Award.
