At 4 30 p m Friday 490 Terry County residents had cast absentee ballots for the June 2 primaries nine in the Republican and 481 in the Democratic ballot count. Clerk Frank Gray called it the heaviest absentee vote since he has held office and voting ends at 5 p m Tuesday.
BISD names Ron Holmes head boys basketball coach at Brownfield High School. Holmes, 29, formerly led Clarendon High School to a district title and a 36-20 record in two seasons, with prior posts at McMurry, Lamesa, and Alamo Junior High. He will sign a BISD contract in Brownfield Tuesday.
Brownfield City Council agreed with Family Network to finish ground floor work in the city owned building south of the police station. The 28 by 120 foot facility will house a youth community center and a human services referral service, funded in the budget for several years. Ground-floor completion includes walls plumbing and electrical work with cleaning. second floor changes were deemed unaffordable for now. The group plans fundraising August 11 and donations to adapt the space, with plans to expand later if money allows.
Commissioners tabled a proposed five dollar county registration fee, with 4.85 to county funds and .15 to the State Department, potentially adding 60 to 65 thousand dollars annually to the County Road and Bridge fund. Action required before September 1, tied to HB 965, with years ending in 5 or 0.
By Lynn Brisendine voters head to the polls for runoff elections in Terry County and across three key races. Democrats and Republicans choose candidates for the U S Congress District 19 and a Democratic nominee for the U S Senate while urging careful voting rules and issue-focused choices.
Brownfield’s Girls Minor League White All Stars coached by Clarence Ervin Ed Acosta and Albert Arrezola travel to Dalhart for the National Little Dribblers Championship after sweeping four foes to claim a regional title. Team members include Candy Cottrell Angela Auburg Cindy Acosta Brooke Mathey Heather McVay Sabrina Snyder Judy Lynn Collins Lisa Josselet Maria Harvell and Jenny Matthews. They open Thursday at 11 45 a m against Central Louisiana with potential Friday 7 15 p m game if they advance.
Lou Lindsey Brownfield High School Speech and Theatre Arts teacher will direct a major production with the University of Texas Drama Department 22nd Annual Summer Theatre Workshop. The June 6 to July 8 program trains 54 high school students in acting voice and technical theatre with guests Robert Singleton and Luis Munoz. Lindsey will also guest teach Acting 301 and lead a second workshop at West Texas State University for about 60 students.
Judge Ray Anderson presided as 121st District Court disposed of four cases. Tommy Constancio pleaded guilty before a jury and drew a five year term in the Texas Department of Corrections. Randy Ray Young pleaded guilty to sexual assault and received a five year probated sentence with probation conditions and fees. Esteban Marin Cisneros also pled guilty to a charge as listed. The Coleman Park Swimming Pool will open for the summer with Gaylon Brnovak and Virdie Montgomery again managing. Hours are 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $1 for all.
