Premium fiber strength eyed for Texas High Plains cotton
Texas High Plains cotton producers may fetch higher prices for fiber meeting or exceeding strength specs. TAEX specialists analyzed strength data from over 60 varieties across South Plains demonstrations in three years. Premiums cited include Plains Cotton Cooperative paying 1 to 3 cents per pound for fibers graded 25 to 27 grams per tex, with higher values for stronger fiber. The study notes strength is genetically influenced but affected by growing conditions, and newer varieties may be underrepresented in the summary.
