Area high schools plan May commencement rites
Meadow High School and Christian Center Academy lead a cluster of Terry County graduations in late May. Meadow sets a baccalaureate at 8 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, with 15 seniors. commencement follows Friday at the school. Casey Coleman and Diana Dunn deliver valedictory and salutatory. Christian Center Academy holds a Friday banquet for its two graduates, Ricky Ballard and Robert Shiflett. The districtwide diplomas occur May 27. Wellman High School grades 8 and 12 hold ceremonies May 26 and 27 respectively, with Lance Hill as eighth grade valedictorian and Robbie Hartman as salutatorian. Union High and Union Junior High also schedule May 27 events, with Jerry McNiel valedictorian and Debra Bayer salutatorian, and Nancy Burnett as historian. An awards ceremony is planned for May 27 afternoon.

Meadow High School announces the 1983 honor graduates Casey Coleman and Diana Lynn Dunn. Coleman is valedictorian with a 96.13 GPA and extensive leadership in NHS, FFA, FHA, and athletics. Dunn is salutatorian with a 95.28 GPA and was senior class vice president and varsity basketball captain. Coleman plans Texas A&M and computer science. Dunn earned all district honors as a senior.

Leann Ellison and Ellen Raynee Davis named Plains High School’s top honors for the Class of 1983. Ellison led with a 95.71 average, while Davis stood second at 92.35. Darrell Dodds was the top boy in the class. Ellison held multiple leadership roles including senior class president and FFA and NHS memberships.

Special Sprints track meet declared a success
The Brownfield VATC Center with local citizens staged the Special Sprints at Cub Field on Friday morning. About 135 students from 10 area schools aged 3 to 22 competed in 10 m 25 m and 50 m 100 m sprints plus football softball and frisbee throws. VATC Supervisor Don McWhorter praised universal participation and noted broad local support.

Spirit of the Plains Band Spring Concert at Coleman Park
The Brownfield High School Spirit of the Plains Band, UIL Sweepstakes winner, will perform an outdoor spring concert at Coleman Park Amphitheater at 7 30 p m Tuesday. The concert will feature two bands with directors Barbara Lovett and Rob Lovett, a sight reading contest, and a Stars and Stripes Forever finale. Admission is free with proceeds from booster sales supporting the band. Local sponsors include Brownfield State Bank First National Bank Coca Cola Bottling Brownfield Packing United Supermarkets.
