Paper n Ink presents a May month note praising mothers and listing humorous medical term definitions from a hospital week project. It includes a Tex Louisiana joke, and a trio of old professions debating oldest profession with a punchline.
Meadow ISD board chose Floyd Guinn for the K through 8 principal post. Guinn leaves Clarendon ISD where he served as principal and earlier worked as a counselor at Clarendon Junior College. He succeeds Lance Morton whose resignation takes effect year end. Superintendent Jimmy Thomas cautioned that state funding may rise only if formulas stay, not enough for planned raises including a $1,140 step increase.
Duckwall-Alco Inc filed Chapter 11 in Topeka Kansas, planning to close about 52 Alco stores including the Brownfield location. Public relations representative Dennis McCullough confirmed the restructuring, with the Brownfield store slated for closure within two months. Local manager Phil Mild noted the Brownfield store is affected by the plan.
On May 14 1989 Brownfield city council discussed absentee voting concerns raised by Aldermen Garza and Salas. They reported voters were misled and urged proper oversight while noting 795 votes with 176 absentee ballots. Mayor Cargill swore in new members Ayburn Cox Sears Edwards and thanked outgoing Swain Simpson.
Brownfield and Terry County officials rejected a $9,000 request to fund two free basketball camps and a volleyball camp, ending a summer tradition due to no budget. County judge Herb Chesshir confirmed no money was allocated. Council also named a pro tem and approved an 11.3 percent increase to city garbage rates to fund a new landfill and related services.
The tenth annual Art-in-Action show by BHS begins 8 15 a m Monday in room 47 of the High School Vocational Wing and runs 8 15 a m to 3 45 p m through Friday. Over 400 artworks in seven categories will be on display and for sale. Judge is Rober Mosier, Texas Tech art major with MFA. Nikki Jinkins leads the program.
