VEW Post Hosts Seventh District Veterans of Foreign Wars Meet

About 125 delegates are expected to attend the Seventh District Convention of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lubbock area. Registration opens at 3 p m Saturday, with a Memorial service at 10 a m Sunday and district officer elections in a 1 30 p m closed session. Virgil Crawford chairs the convention committee.

Final Rites Held For Mrs Cardwell

Funeral services for Mrs. Perla Cardwell 89 were held Saturday at 2 p m in the First Methodist Church with Rev Vel D Crosby officiating. Burial was in Brownfield Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home direction. She died May 4 in Treadaway Daniell Hospital after a short illness. A resident of Terry County since 1906 she came from Tyler. Survived by three sons Olen Palvadera NM George Denver City and Johnny Fresno California two daughters Mrs BE W Rambo Brownfield and Mrs CC Terry Amarillo one brother L Herrin Byers 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Canadien River Water Authority Seeks Quick Cost Figures

The Canadien River Municipal Water Authority directors voted to ask the Bureau of Reclamation office at Amarillo to provide fast figures on the same specifications for the project as proposed in the private financing plan. The action followed a lengthy discussion on private versus government financing for the canal project.

Calvary Baptist Leaders Travel to Southern Baptist Convention

Fourteen year old Calvary Baptist Church member Mary Edith Stowe joins Rev. Warren Stowe Mrs. Stowe and daughters Carolyn Ruth on a trip to Miami Florida for the week long Southern Baptist Convention. The group will study crop prospects and church plans to build a new 600 seat auditorium on the lot south of the church with construction timing tied to crop outcomes.

Meadow Schools Schedule Finalized For May

Meadow schools close May 25 with baccalaureate May 22 at 8 p m in Meadow Baptist Church and commencement May 24 at Meadow High School. J L Carroll, superintendent, announced the plan.

Funeral Services Feld For Mrs Winningham

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the First Baptist church of Meadow for Mrs. Faye Winningham 49. Rev. Arlas Coward of Lubbock officiated assisted by Rev. T E Harrell. Burial was in Meadow cemetery directed by Brownfield Funeral Home. She died suddenly at home northwest of Meadow Monday and is survived by her husband Allen an uncle aunt two nephews and a niece. Pallbearers were Perry McAlister Max Kiser Lewis Peeler Lee Bartlett Odell Valentine and Bill Knight. Honorary pallbearers included Cecil Kelsey Bruce Zorns Calvin Bartlett John Cadenhead Herman Horschler and Glendale Simmons. Grade school graduation will be held at 8 p m May 23 with senior civics tests and finals scheduled May 16 19 20 23 and 24. May 25 closes the school year. Bobby Horton sophomore at Meadow High School won third place in the Interscholastic League Ready Writers contest at Austin for How My Community Should Prepare for an Atomic Attack accompanied by his parents and J L Carroll superintendent of Meadow schools.

Cotton Week festivities and local weekend events mix in Terry County

County wide citizen conference backs school program changes

The third meeting of the local Citizens Advisory Conference discussed school program improvements after group sessions. Statewide meetings follow a 1953 board study of the minimum foundation program and potential reforms. The conference declined district restructuring, noting four districts in the county, and forwarded conclusions to the State Board of Education. Terry County begins National Cotton Week with events on Saturday on the east side of the courthouse.

Countywide Rain Boosts Planting Prospects in Terry County

Rain total from an inch to two and a half inches drenched Terry County over three days this week. County Agent Jim Foy estimates about 90 percent of nearly 160000 acres of cotton will be planted by May 25, with 70000 irrigated acres in excellent condition. Tornado scares and hail accompanied the moisture as Wellman Gomez and Brownfield areas noted significant rainfall.

Honolulu Plugs For Northwest Terry County Test

A dial completion and one abandoned location marked the week in Terry county oil news. Honolulu Oil Corp No 1 B Hila Covington four miles north of Prentice field and 13 miles north of Tokio was plugged and abandoned at 12 478 feet after a plug back at 5 180 feet. Salt water was recovered in a drillstem test at Phillips No 1 John E. southwest of Gomez. A test from 5908 to 6102 feet yielded 440 feet of salt water with drilling mud and 4000 feet of sulphur salt water. Flowing pressure 1990 psi and a 15 minute shut in of 2285 psi. The 13500 Elvienburger Test lies 60 feet from section lines in Block D-11 near the Devonian field, south and east of Brownfield. Production site is 61 miles south of Conceto. See Honolulu Page 2.

YMCA Summer Recreation Schedule Set for Terry County

The YMCA announces a May 21 gathering at Regal Theatre for children 10 and up to join a summer program starting June 1. Director R T Wilson outlines daily activities at the Presbyterian Youth Center and local venues with golf, crafts, photography, archery, tennis, radio, and volleyball led by named instructors from May 22 to Fridays.
