City Budget Plan for 1982 83 With Small Rate Hikes
Brownfield City Manager Jake Geron outlined the proposed 1982-83 city budget of 6 951 125 at a council session. A public hearing is set for March 18 with a vote to follow. The plan keeps the tax rate at 44 cents per 100 valuation and includes eight percent increases in water and garbage rates. Water stays 4 for the first 2 000 gallons then 1.10 per 1 000 gallons after that. Garbage rises from 4 50 to 4 85 monthly. The budget forecasts higher revenues and expenditures over 1981-82 and includes a 10 percent city employee pay raise with up to 14 percent for supervisors. The city has lost 14 employees in six months to oil-related firms.

Jones Spells His Way To Terry County Title
Craig Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Jones, spelled Hawker correctly Thursday to win the Terry County spelling bee and advance to the regional bee at Lubbock Christian College on April 3. He is a fifth grader at Brownfield Intermediate, defeating three Brownfield contestants. Allison Dyess was runner up. The regional winner goes to the national spelling bee in Washington D C from June 7 to 11.
