County Commission Inches Tax Rate Toward 1.07

Terry County Commissioners Court endorsed a plan to cut the tax rate from 1.10 to 1.07 per 100 of assessed valuation. The final rate awaits formal budget approval after August 15, with a groundwork created for the County Tax Assessor-Collector to start on county rolls.

Brownfield Public Schools Budget Approved At Hearing

Trustees unanimously approved the 1965 66 budget in the high school library setting the tax rate at 1.50 dollars unchanged from last year. The revenue and expenditures were each 1 563 988 33 dollars with a 26 175 33 dollar surplus absorbed. Dr O R Douglas highlighted raises for teachers with bachelors and masters degrees while planning a conservative year with 10 percent cuts in operations and no tax increase.

WTCC Gathering Set In Brownfield For District Campaign

WTCC leaders from 19 Panhandle and South Plains counties meet at Brownfield Chamber building at 2:30 p.m. led by Dennis Lilly to kick off an intensified membership drive. Beeman Fisher Henry Sears and John Ben Shepperd will address district directors on engagement, finance and Infocade oriented goals. The WTCC margins reflect 3,000 members across a 1382 county area.

Reception Planned For Beck And Family

A get acquainted reception for Raymond Beck and his family is set for Thursday evening from 5 to 7 30 in the Flame Room of Pioneer Natural Gas Company. Beck recently became Brownfield Chamber of Commerce manager and invites all to meet him and his family. The Chamber's Red Coat group will staff the reception line and punch and coffee will be served.

Brownfield Masonic Lodge No. 903 installed new officers with Meadow Lodge No. 1228 assisting at the Masonic Temple in Brownfield. Period law enforcement activity dominates Brownfield area blotters

Brownfield police and Terry County deputies report numerous thefts and burglaries during the period. The sheriff’s blotter notes two thefts including seven used tires stolen from a Sawyer Graham farm and gasoline missing from a Brownfield resident’s tank. City reports include burglaries, drunk and liquor law violations, and multiple arrests. Ten aliens were detained for illegal entry, and several vehicle accidents involve local residents on Main Lubbock Road and Lubbock Road.

Guilty Pleas Entered In Non Jury Criminal Cases

In the 121st Judicial District Court Judge M C Ledbetter presided as both guilty pleas were entered. Edward Yuzbick former manager of Piggly Wiggly in Brownfield pled guilty to embezzlement and received a three year suspended sentence. Richard Wilson pled guilty to forgery by alteration and also got a three year suspended sentence.

Rites Held For Mrs E L Loftin

Funeral services were held for Mrs. E. L. Loftin 43 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. A D Kyle officiating. Burial followed in Terry County Memorial Cemetery. She died at 5 45 am Monday at her home after a long illness. Survivors include her husband two brothers James W. Smith and Larry Wayne Smith two sisters Mrs Clara Chumley and Mrs Dorothy Diaz.
