The Brownfield NEWS notes Dollar Day shifts due to Independence Day falling on a Sunday. It warns shoppers to expect a Tuesday July 6 sales push and reports on school budget pressures and pay scales. It also recounts a lighthearted feud between Lions Club and Rotary stalwarts and a reader letter.
Brownfield School Board approved a new teacher salary schedule raising annual amounts for bachelor and master degree holders as part of the 1965 66 budget. One member Carroll Collier dissented citing potential future tax increases affecting bonds. A public hearing on the budget is set for tomorrow at 7 30 pm in the Brownfield High School library.
Lance Warren Roberts of Brownfield Texas, Class of 1965 valedictorian, has earned an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs. He will report for testing and basic training this summer with classroom work to begin in fall. Roberts praised supporters including Congressman George Mahon, and a resolution commending him was issued by local officials.
Local estimates show Terry County residents may spend about $31 daily for two people on road trips, assuming 300 miles daily at 15 mpg. Annual ownership costs reach 1,177 per car, with fixed costs 807 and operating costs 370, totaling over 8.46 million dollars for local drivers.
Dennis Lilly will direct a July 1 briefing at Brownfield Chamber offices for WTCC District 2 directors from 19 Panhandle and South Plains counties. Fort Worth’s Beeman Fisher Henry Sears and John Ben Shepperd will discuss chamber programs and membership drives including Infocade 66 and district campaigns.
Brownfield's Rotary Club held a Friday luncheon to install Carrol Collier as president succeeding Bill Noble. NEW officers include Harry Elam as first vice president Mack Ross as second vice president and Dr E B Posey as secretary Newell Reed led the installation and Noble handed a plaque of appreciation for service.
Lowell Hunt publisher and general manager announced staff changes at the Brown field NEWS naming Larry Smallwood as assistant manager and advertising manager. Tom Petty joined the advertising department after moving from Lubbock and residing at 409 E Tate. Petty, 28, studied advertising and marketing at Texas Tech and served with the Army at Fort Hood before joining NEWS.
