News places twice in TPA newspaper contest

The Brownfield News earned a second in advertising and a fourth in column writing in the Texas Press Association 1983 Better Newspaper Contest for semi weekly papers over 3,000 circulation. Publisher Lynn Brisendine accepted the awards at a breakfast during the summer convention in Austin. Brisendine’s advertising winner was the A to Z promotion at Christmas described as a Real Winner, and his column Paper N Ink was praised as well written on serious and humorous topics.

Wilson found Guilty on two counts Friday

Laurence Wilson Jr. was found guilty by a five man, seven woman jury of one count rape of a child and one count sexual abuse of a child. After a 1 hour 47 minute deliberation they convicted, then spent 2 hours 19 minutes more before sentencing to 20 years in the Texas Department of Correction plus a $1,000 fines per count. Deliberations began at 1 12 p m and verdict at 2 59 p m. Defense attorney John O Shea of Lubbock. Prosecutor Dwayne Pruitt. Sentencing before Judge Ray Anderson at 2 p m Monday.
