Byron Watts and his wife will move this week to Temple Texas where he will oversee a TG and Y store about three times larger than his Brownfield assignment. The family, Presbyterian members and Lions Club participants, has two sons Glen eight and Lars six. They plan to buy a Temple home this weekend as Phil Thurman succeeds Watts in Brownfield arriving from Abilene with his wife and one child.
Plans to boost the South Plains economy were laid at a June 20 SPD meeting in Lubbock. Officers elected include Donnell Echols president Ray Poage vice chairman and R N McClain secretary treasurer. Over 200 agricultural leaders discussed by laws and task forces to revitalize producer efforts.
Two Brownfield businessmen relocate weekly to larger outlets in Oklahoma and Texas. Bill Craig moves to Altus to run the bigger Wacker store, Byron Watts to Temple to manage the larger TG and Y store. Their successors are Paul Shell hammer and Phil Thurman. A new box and phone number accompany the move. Joe Masso sails to Arabia on business. A local firm files for bankruptcy. A Sunday crash at Main and Lubbock injures Mr and Mrs James Brown of Pampa and Gary Farrar. Mrs Brown is treated and released, Mr Brown hospitalized in Lubbock.
First United Methodist Church hosts a six day Youth Crusade June 29 through July 3 with evangelist Steve Harper of Abi lene leading services at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Danny Amerson directs music. Activities include junior and senior high programs, volleyball, a hayride, swim party, twilight service, and Rejoice Communion. James Faulkenberry chairs event with multiple committee members assisting.
Bill Craig will move with his family to Altus Oklahoma to manage the larger Wacker Store there about three times the size of the Brownfield location Their new address is 512 Park Lane in Altus They have three children Debbie 18 Brent 16 and Beck 5 They attend Calgary Baptist Church Paul Shellhammer of Lawton Oklahoma will succeed Craig as Brownfield store manager and is married with one child.
Six members of the Terry County Young Farmers Association met in Levelland to organize a panel discussion with Secretary of Agriculture Clifford M. Hardin to be held in Lubbock in the fall. Local representatives from five counties formed committees to cover topics such as cotton labor lending agencies grains and agribusiness. Bridges said a county meeting will be arranged in two or three weeks to prepare for Hardin’s visit and improve farm program bargaining power.
Wayland Parker Chapter of the Order of DeMolay hosted Masons as guests during a regular session on Monday night. Attending Masons included Thurman Skains Mozelle Ratliff Shay Bynum Wayne Rattiseau Keith Van divere Lynn Halamicek John Ball and Leonard Ellington with visitors from E Y FE Lee Chapter Lubbock and Kenny Nelson of the Lubbock Chapter. Two DeMolay degrees were conferred by Nousseau for Howard Darwin and Rusty Cottrell. Tommy Jones received a medallion from Rattiseau and a reception followed with Mothers Club hosting about fifty attendees.
The 1969 Babe Ruth Season ends Friday June 27 after the final game between the Red Sox and Pirates. Ceremonies crown the queen and tournament plans are set, including a 13 year old tournament in Slaton on July 7.
Ronnie Hartman, son of Mr and Mrs A J Hartman, Brownfield area, will receive the Star American Farmer of Area II at the State FFA Convention in Dallas on July 17 1819. He began FFA work in 1957 with 4 H roots, later earning the Lone Star Farmer degree in 1967 and now the National FFA honor. He plans to attend the National Convention in October in Kansas City Kansas to receive his American Farmer certificate. He lives on a farm west of Brownfield and serves in the Texas National Guard.
