Ramblins recounts a lively Terry County parade with riding clubs and modern floats, notes the Gomez store closing and the Lewis auction amid health woes, and reflects on a nostalgic summer day with open windows and birdsong.
The Terry County Sheriff s Posse Rodeo kicked off with near perfect weather and large crowds. Jerry Stroud of Clovis New Mexico won calf roping in 13.3 seconds while Travis Nuckols and Jack Tucker tied at 13.4 and 14.0 seconds respectively. Odell Tuggle of Brownfield won the 18 and under ribbon roping in 26.2 seconds. Jud Sims led saddle bronc with 56 points on John. J W Crockett rode Smooth Operator for 39. Don Pierice of Hereford failed to score on Brownie. Robbie Gail Hoggan Brownfield won girls barrel race in 19.0 seconds. Debbie White Head Morton 19.2. Jacque Soehngen Brownfield 19.9. Belinda Whittenburg Levelland led novice girls barrel race at 21.2 seconds with Gladys Pinkett Ropesville 21.4 and Carole Hall Lubbock 21.9. Six bull riders had no qualifying rides in first and second sections.
Thursday marked the Gomez Store closing for the first time since 1903. Mr. and Mrs. Loy Lewis sold the building and fixtures due to ill health, expressing regret and hope for a future community store. The long history includes multiple owners, moves, a 1903 start, a 1927 fire, and a 1929 rebuilt building, with Gomez once a thriving town two to three miles south of its present site.
Brownfield city council opened three bids for City Hall remodeling at 8 30 a m The low bid of 13 565 50 came from James Blair a contractor from Lubbock Council members accepted the low bid and Blair would start after contracts are drawn Blair estimated the job at 60 days Other bids were Loyd E Moore and Son 17 475 and Cecil M Pharr Construction Co 23 668 The project remodels the former police station and jail into a meeting room and updates the council room and front offices The council also accepted a by law amendment for the Canadian River Water Authority fiscal year to begin Oct 1 and end Sept 30 The change aims to align budgets with current practices The rains in the past two years were noted and city council discussed related impacts Turn To Page

Clyde K Schneid District 2T-2 Governor of Lubbock officiated with a ceremony naming officers including Bill Cowan Lonnie Mantoo th treasurer Coy Jones tail twister Earl Fox director Jim Culver secretary Dr Tim Faulkenberry second vice president Joe Masso third vice president Charles Darwin first vice president James G Morris Lion tamer Community leaders and entertainer Loman Jones were featured with plaques of appreciation for service to projects and a Mr Dough Bill act closing the event.
A special DeMolay meeting and reception honor Tomo my Jones, immediate past West Texas Area Master Counselor, at the Masonic Lodge. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and the reception follows at 8 30 p.m. All Masons are invited.

Texas Highway Patrol investigated a one car rollover on U S 385 six miles north of here. Douglass Junior Skaggs, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace George Steele. Skaggs, a mechanic at Tokio, was alone. His body was taken to Brownfield Funeral Home then to Spicer Funeral Home in Memphis for services. The death toll in Terry County since January 1 rose to seven.
Born to Texas pioneers Elmer and Lillie Trostle, Roscoe Trostle grew up on a Wheeler County ranch near Shamrock. An ordained Elder for 32 years, he combines religion and teaching, with 17 years of instruction, a Masters in administration, and past roles as principal at East Ward Slaton and pastor in San Jon Vaughn Ackerly Bovina Follett and Quitaque.
