Texas DPS Predicts 34 Deaths During July Fourth Holiday
Colonel Wilson E. Speir announces the Texas Department of Public Safety estimates 34 persons will be fatally injured in traffic accidents during the 78 hour July 4 holiday period from 6 p.m. July 3 to midnight July 6. DPS will activate Motorcide and deploy all patrols to enforce traffic laws and reduce crashes. Speir urges careful planning to avoid speeding and cautions motorists to watch for pedestrians on beaches and parks. He warns against drunk driving as states laws will be vigorously enforced.

Services Held For Phil Gaasch Friday
Funeral services for Phil Palmer Gaasch 52 were held at 2 p m Friday at First United Presbyterian Church with Rev Frank Brooks officiating. Burial followed at Terry County Memorial Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home direction. Gaasch died from a heart attack after his car was found on a Lubbock street. He moved to Brownfield in 1946, founded Gaasch Pipe Construction in 1950, and served as an elder, Rotary past president, and chamber director. He was a WWII Army Engineers lieutenant colonel. Survivors include wife Janet two sons Ronald and Wade a daughter Mrs Jerry Timmons his father Glenn M Gaasch and one brother Melvin. Pallbearers listed.

Wellman July Fourth Patriotic Celebration Planned
Wellman residents plan an old fashioned Fourth of July event with an 8 p.m. program at the football stadium weather permitting. If needed it moves to Wellman High School auditorium. Guest speakers include 1st Sgt. J. Fred Gough of the Marine Corps and Jim Ravanelli LCC admissions director. Ravanelli is a New Mexico native with degrees from LCC and Abilene Christian College and has held multiple roles in student leadership and public speaking. He lectures on patriotism and works with high school assemblies and college outreach. Sgt. Gough, a Hutchinson Kansas native, served in Korea and later in the Marine Corps.
