A Terry County grand jury returned seven true bills this week and commended Brownfield Police Department and Terry County Sheriff’s Office for notable cooperation between county and city agencies. Named defendants include Willie Hayes Foster for removal of mortared property and Loyd Gordon Cochran and Griff Mitchell Rayburn for second offense driving while intoxicated, Kathy J Burtusch for passing a forged instrument, and Bob E Kemmer and FM McGettes for passing forged instruments. Ter ry County farmer Herbert Hicks farms 320 acres near here and now owns 150 irrigated acres while renting another quarter section. Facing cotton allotment cuts he added hogs, raising about 130 porkers after four to five months, with 50 taken in January and February. He keeps sows and litters in a steel farrowing barn with automated heaters and pasture finishing, marketing at 225 to 250 pounds. Hicks also manages 112 acres of cotton and oats, citing plans to buy steers if oat sales falter. He and his wife Jane, married last March, run a robust diversified operation and credit his success to his farm.

Brownfield Troops Earn Top Rating in Summer Training
Brownfield's Howitzer Company of the 12th Armored Cavalry Regiment arrived June 14 with 82 enlisted men and officers. The unit has a week left in a 14 day summer training program for Texas National Guardsmen. Regular Army inspectors rated the company’s firing on the Jark Mountain Range as superior to other howitzer units in the regiment. The Brownfield group maintains high standards in records, barracks, and mess hall, with Lt. Victor Herring praising unit morale and the effort of all 42 men present.

Thrips and aphid infestations are light in several counties and fleahoppers show varying levels with the heaviest in Baines County. During week two training Brownfield troops move to fields for firing while guardsmen prep for the basic combat test and depart Fort Hood around noon next Saturday.
