Weather threats and crashes keep local officials busy

A possible tornado near Tokio prompted police to monitor at 9 51 p m Tuesday but winds were strong only. The storm damaged the Bell residence roof and forced refuge in a bath. Earlier a vehicle crash at Elm and Tate involved a 1964 Ford driven by Karen Branham.

Wilkerson Elected UCT Leader at Dallas Convention

Craig Wilkerson named Grand Officer of United Commercial Travelers the 74th annual convention in Dallas. He has served the organization a decade and also holds roles in the Brownfield FUCT chapter. Police report lists multiple vehicle accidents and numerous drunkenness and traffic fines across several addresses.

27th Session of Boys State Opens

The 27th Session of Boys State opens with Jack W. Flynt stating the department commander role. Citizens register and join Long horn or Pioneer parties and participate in precinct county and state conventions. A Friday Capitol visit will crown the event with officials serving a day and the Governor's Ball that evening.

Summer Track Meet Scheduled at Brownfield

Brownfield hosts a Summer Track Meet Saturday with towns represented. The event, sponsored by the Brownfield Lions Club, invites high school eligible athletes for boys and girls events including field events. Open Division features Robert Medlock Claudell Morgan and Larry Burnett competing.

Loyalty Day Parade Plans Moving Along

Brownfield residents plan a July 4 Loyalty Day Parade with a fly over by two T-38 jets from Reese Air Force Base at 1 000 feet. Speakers include Dr Mattox and Rep Jesse T George. Local bands National Guard and American Legion to participate with about 300 flags provided.

Citizens discuss need for juvenile officer in Terry County

A 7:30 p.m. meeting of the Community Development Committee of the Chamber of Commerce in the Flame Room of Pioneer Natural Gas discussed creating a juvenile officer for Terry County. Speakers described duties, salaries, and qualifications while noting existing limits and the need for youth programs.

Pan American Oil celebrates 30th year in Brownfield

Pan American Oil Company marks three decades in Brownfield and hosts an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. at its new 8,000 square foot office on the second floor of the State Bank Trust building. G.A. Jones Construction Company of Lamesa completed 2,500 square feet of new space and a remodel of the older area. A tour will be given and refreshments served to attendees.

Area girls head to Girls State session in Austin

About 400 area girls depart for a 10 day Girls State program in Austin. Two finalists will be chosen to attend Girls Nation in Washington. The event includes city government simulations, the Girls State paper, and musical programs.

Solons Buy Sheriff Auto and County Equipment

Terry County Commissioners Court approved purchases including an Intex photo state recorder for the County Clerk, an edger for courthouse lawns, and a new sheriff’s department car. Bids ranged from 1945 for a Ford with no air conditioning to 2638 for an Olds Mobile. The Dar win Ford bid was chosen unani mously after removing the air conditioner to lower cost. Commissioner Settle opposed the new car. The resignation of county home administration agent Caroly Cates was accepted effective July 20. Airport lighting bid by Bielss and Letsinger was tabled for review.
