A severe dust storm hit Wednesday afternoon with a funnel sighting near Seagraves. A 600 seat baseball grandstand was demolished, buildings damaged, and fences splintered while in Brownfield rain totals reached about 0.29 inches and minor fire damage occurred from downed electric lines. Farther north a tractor was struck by lightning, killing Earl Rogers, 54.

Charlie Palmer Critically Burned In Home Explosion
Charlie Palmer suffered severe facial and hand burns after a butane stove explosion in his cellar while seeking shelter from a rainstorm. A Mexican neighbor pulled him from the flames with a rope, saving his life as he lost sight in one eye and use of one arm. He remains in room 33 awaiting care.

Humble Oil and Refining Co completed one well in Terry County last week at No. 1 B. V. Guetersloh, Section 20, Block C-37, PSL survey. Depth reached 8,904 feet with 8,892 feet of 51/2 inch easing, pay topped at 8,880 feet, and a 266.74 barrel per day oil flow through a 14 inch choke with no water. Gas to oil ratio recorded at 490 to 1. Two other wells were being drilled in the county this week by Texas Co. and Phillips Petroleum Co.

RCA Rodeo Opens With Cowboys Competing For 2724 Purse
The 1955 RCA rodeo kicks off Thursday evening in the Sheriff’s Posse arena with 80 cowboys and cowgirls from the U S and Canada chasing a 2724 dollar purse. Local entrants include 14 sheriff’s passes from the South Plains area and riders from Brownfield Littlefield Hereford and other towns. World champion calf roper Toots Mansfield and top roper Bud Linderman are billed, with events in bareback bronc saddle bronc bulldogging and barrel racing plus a bullfight and a post show dance by the Terry County Sheriff’s Posse. Judges Shadow Mueller and Bil Watts will rate performances.
