Miss South Plains Pageant Final Plans Unfold Saturday

The Miss South Plains Pageant returns to Brownfield High School Auditorium this Saturday at 8 pm with seven contestants representing Terry Gaines and Yockum counties. Judges will assess talent evening gown and swimsuit as Jaycees handle tickets and program duties.

Redistricting Bill Paves Way to Voters in Texas

State representative Jesse T. George of the 90th district announced by phone that a controversial redistricting measure will go to Texas voters as a constitutional amendment for approval or rejection on September 7, 1965. The plan follows his column submission and note that the traditional 31 member Senate will prevail after the 39 member Senate bill was killed. A public notice about the amendment runs in today’s NEWS.

Local Boys Attend Annual American Legion Boys State

Forty to fifty youths from the county high schools join about 750 peers at the American Legion Boys State in Austin opening Saturday sponsored by Howard-Henson Post No. 269. Leaders include Lt. Gov. speakers from the University of Texas and state government. participants learn by doing in party roles and conventions leading to a Capitol visit and Governor's Ball.

FBI Agent Will Speak At Credit Club Luncheon

J Gordon Shanklin special agent in charge of the FBI Dallas will be guest speaker at the Consumer Credit Club luncheon June 15 in the Flame Room of Pioneer Natural Gas Building. Shanklin has a Vanderbilt law degree and a long FBI career including leadership posts in Mobile Pittsburg El Paso Honolulu and Dallas divisions. He is married with two children.

May Rainfall Above Average in Brownfield

May rainfall in Brownfield totaled 3.48 inches, 1.34 inches above normal as reported by KKUB. The month saw wide temperature swings with a record high 100 degrees on May 22 and a low of 48 on May 10, with 1.75 inches of rain that day. Average highs reached 85 and lows 58.

City Police Report Rash of Accidents and Related Incidents

Brownfield city police logged five traffic accidents since Saturday none with serious injuries. Incidents include a three car crash at Alt Street and Lubbock Highway with three drivers, a farm road collision by Harbin's Grocery, a ditch crash on Lake Street, a rollover at Ozark Mahoning Plant, and a Shoprite trailer collision causing multiple vehicle damages. Also noted were a break in at Denison Auto a DWI arrest a drunkenness arrests liquor law violations a weapon carry case and sheriff investigations into battery theft from Dewey Reynolds property. Additional arrests included others for vagrancy and check law violations with bonds set.

Lions Hold Installation for Ladies Night and New Officers

Lions Club held its annual Ladies Night at the Party House Tuesday. District governor elect Alton Griffin installed officers led by President David Nicholson and 1st Vice-President Doug Cox. Life Memberships were awarded to Frank Szydioski, Craig Wilkerson, and Jake Geron for the Kerrville Crippled Children's Camp.

Orman Presents Okinawa Film to Brown Field Jaycees

L V Orman USN presented a film titled The Battle of Okinawa to the Brownfield Jaycees during a Monday noon meeting at the Party House. Club president David Cole announced the Miss South Plains pageant set for next Saturday at 8 p.m. in the High School auditorium. Two cleanup campaign teams were formed with Frank Harmon and John Ivey as captains for June 20 to June 26. Guests included Eldon Akin, Joe Horton, and Tom Petty.

Clean-Up Committee Schedules Meeting

The clean up committee plans a general meeting at 16 a m Friday in the Chamber of Commerce building. City and county officials join in a campaign to clear fire and health hazards collecting across the county. Ten Clean-Up Campaigns are scheduled for June 2026 sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.
