Miss South Plains Pageant Nears Big Night

Seven candidates vie for Miss South Plains of 1965 as Brownfield Jaycees stage a pageant at Brownfield High School Auditorium with 8 p.m. start. Entrants from Terry Gaines and Yoakum counties include Connie Baker Janie Golden Anita Gray Jo Hubbard Jan Nicholson Carolyn Caloway and Linda Seago.

Brownfield Council Approves CRMWA Water Plan and Museum Move

Brownfield City Council accepted a Canadian River Municipal Water Authority proposal for participation in a water softening project to be installed at the Lubbock treatment plant with local costs at 14 cents per 1000 gallons. The aqueduct cost was reduced and the rate lowered from an initial 21.27 to 17.15 cents. The Old Hamilton House may be moved to the county park and turned into a museum if approved by authorities. The council also discussed updates to city ordinances, Oak Grove park water costs, and a FBI school for Police Captain Beauchamp, with a June 2026 cleanup campaign planned.

Law Enforcers In Busy Time

Local police in Brownfield and Terry County investigate multiple break ins and thefts from May 24 31. A Goodpasture Manufacturing building on South 14th Street saw entry by prying a front door with coin box theft and drawers ransacked. A Kohler gasoline generator was stolen from a Micro-Wave Service Company tower three miles south of the Pool store valued around 250. Cosmetics worth about 100 vanished from Mrs Cora Long’s home. Two six volt batteries valued at 30 were taken from Paul Blackstock’s tractor northwest of Gomez. Police also probe a warehouse break in with no theft and report youths throwing rocks.

Optimists Visit Brownfield Boys' Club

Members of the Brownfield Optimist Club toured the Brownfield Boys' Club after their Thursday noon meeting. Harold Andrews, director of the Boys' Club, led the tour and outlined the clubs needs. The Optimists plan to return next Thursday to help paint the building.

Lions Debate Future Major Projects at Club Meeting

David Nicholson, to be installed Tuesday as Lions Club president, led last Wednesday’s regular session at the Party House. He solicited ideas for major projects for the Board of Directors while noting several potential undertakings. Guests included Raymond Beck Jr, Tim Faulkenberry, and Dale Durham as lapel pins were awarded to new members Bob Sewell, Charles Darwin, and C W Denison.

Tax Equalization Board Schedules Public Hearing

The Tax Equalization Board will hold a public hearing at 9 a.m. Tuesday June 15 in City Hall Council Room to review property assessments for equalization with January 1 as the effective date. Residents should bring their books and records. Gene Canon was elected chairman and Jack Ling secretary, with J. M. Bailey Odell Sears Dewey Rogers and W. T. McKinney as members.
