The Brownfield High School Baseball Cubs survived two Fabens Wildcats rallies to win 5 4 in Carlsbad New Mexico and clinch a berth to the Class AAA state tournament in Austin on Thursday and Friday. The nailbiting victory secured their trip to the finals.
Brownfield Rotary recognized three local students Shay Moore Shawn Cox and Cottrell at Friday's Coleman Park Party House meeting. Cottrell received a 500 Rotary Scholarship for graduating high school with Band leadership and top academic honors. Moore and Cox earned Rotary Youth Leadership Awards to attend camps this summer.
In a brief session the Brownfield City Council approved using city hall as a polling place for Saturday's Republican Primary runoff. City Manager Dick Fletcher reported on the wastewater plant, noting pumps and pipes to oxygenate the main pond, weather and rain delays, and a plan to complete the install and return the pond to operation by weekend. Fletcher also addressed a city policy requiring roofers on local homes to be bonded.
Brownfield High School lists summer courses in seven subjects English I II III IV pre algebra algebra I and physical science. Registration runs 8 to noon Monday with classes starting Tuesday. Fees are 50 dollars for district residents and 75 dollars for nonresidents. Sessions run through July 25 with July 4 holiday. Contact counselor Edith Wheeler at 637-4523 for details.
After the May 24 hail, out of town roofers flood the city seeking repairs funded by insurance. Contractors must post a $5,000 bond and obtain building permits with fees based on job cost. Starting June 9, unbonded or unpermitted work will face a stop work order. Homeowners repairing their own property are exempt from bond but not permit. For questions contact the building inspection department at city hall 637-4547.
Superintendent Don Hendley criticized the release of TECAT results to TV and press before districts received data. He questioned the reported 98 percent BISD pass rate and said he had not been informed beforehand. He tried to reach the Texas Education Agency in Austin regarding the results.
Wellman School Superintendent Raymond Lusk announced at the monthly school board meeting that the TEA monitoring team commended the district for comprehensive planning, outstanding curriculum documents, and a specially noted Spanish program. The board also approved an $11,200 bid from BPR Grouting & Engineering to repair structural damage in the elementary gym.
Brownfield Cubs face Llano Yellow Jackets in a regional semi final moved from Abilene to San Angelo due to weather. Fans and players await final site decision as game time nears with no crowd at the field and two teams fresh off victories.
