May rainfall surprises Terry County with heavy rain

In Terry County May ended wet with Brownfield receiving over four inches mainly from a Memorial Day weekend storm. City totals included 1.66 inches with hail, 1.5 inches on the 30th, and smaller amounts on the 26th and 27th. Temperature highs reached 100 degrees on May 22 while lows dipped to 42 on the 19th. Farmer reports note abundant rainfall delaying field work with Wellman and Pleasant Valley gin districts among the heaviest hit. By June, Brownfield had 1.42 inches for the month so far, versus a normal 2.41.

Cubs blast Jackets in regional semi finals

The Cubs defeated the Llano Yellowjackets 8-3 in Fort Stockton to advance to the regional finals against Fabens. Key early offense came on an error, stolen base, and RBI single by Danny Garza and Chris Billings, with Tony Garcia contributing to the scoring as Brownfield seizes the win despite travel hurdles and weather delays.

Terry County voters set for runoff primaries in Texas

Voters in Terry County will cast ballots Saturday in Democratic and Republican primaries with open polling from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. No county races appear. Democratic runoff races include four for Texas Supreme Court and one for the Texas Railroad Commission. Republican runoff include lieutenant governor, attorney general, land commissioner, and railroad commission seats. Polling places span Brownfield and surrounding precincts with specific site allocations. Sample ballots appear on page 12A of this edition.

Brownfield City Council set to meet Thursday

City officials convene at 7:30 a.m. in the council chambers for a brief session with two items on the agenda. The Terry County Republican Party seeks use of City Hall for Saturday’s run off election, and an update on wastewater plant piping modifications is due.

Country Caravan to Make Annual Stop in Brownfield

The South Plains College Country Caravan music revue returns to Brownfield for an 8:30 p.m. free ninety minute show on the First National Bank parking lot. The 10th season features 12 South Plains students performing 30 tunes from country, gospel and bluegrass, plus Appalachian clogging and medleys honoring Texas history and Buddy Holly.

Terry County basketball camp planned at Brownfield High

Terry County offers a free two week basketball camp for boys and girls entering grades four through eight this fall at Brownfield High School. Ron Holmes will supervise with Terry County coaches directing sessions from June 16-20 for boys and June 23-27 for girls. Morning drills run 9 to noon, afternoon league play 1:30 to 5:30 with age and skill level teams and individual attention. Contact Holmes at 637 8902 for details.
