Rodney Warren second vice president is not Way installs 1990 officer slate officers for the 1990-91 Terry county United Way Campaign were elected at a Board meeting last Friday at the Brownfield chamber of Commerce. Larry Yowell will be the president Rodney Keeton the first vice president Rodney Warren the second vice president and Jim Hobbs the treasurer. Elective members of the Board include in addition to these four Are Bob Cannon representing Goodpastur Sandra Baker for Brownfield state Bank Jay Andrews Meadow Jackie Burris Wellman and Randy Simpson Union. Representatives of participating agencies who Are on the Board include Dick Fletcher Good Fellows Max Rodolph salvation army and Betty Bullard american red Cross. Elayne Farrar will represent the american association of University women. There will also be representation from the service clubs. Sex offi Cio members include the county judge the three mayors in the county Brownfield Meadow and Wellman the four Terry county school superintendents the United Way of Terry county past president the presidents of the local service clubs Optimist noon Lions evening Lions and kiwanis the news and radio station takers ruled eligible for Stamps a recent decision by state officials has opened the Way for food stamp recipients to do temporary work for the census Bureau without losing their Federal benefits. The decision affects people who receive Ardc Aid for families with dependent children and people who receive food Stamps. The announcement was made by the . Department of agriculture. The family support administration of health and human services another Agency of the government has authorized a plan that allows those receiving Ardc to also work for the census without losing their benefits. Both exemptions Are in effect from March i aug. 31. Officials encourage those receiving food Stamps or Ardc to consider Short term employment As census takers. To inquire about temporary employment with the census Bureau Contact the nearest census District office or the Texas employment commission. The Kickoff luncheon has been slated for october to. Before elections were held past president Kelly Moore announced that quarterly disbursements were set for july and another in october. Moore added that last year s Campaign was t one of the Best and the budget and admissions committee needed to take a hard look in setting figures for the next Campaign. Teams Texas educational assessment of minimum skills tests math Reading and writing abilities. Ninety six percent of the tested Wisd students demonstrated Mastery of math while 94 percent passed the Reading test and 86 percent performed up to expectations on the writing test. One Hundred percent of the students in grades five nine and 11 passed the math test with Only one student in Grade three and one student in Grade seven not demonstrating Mastery. In Reading too percent of the students in grades five seven nine and 11 passed. On the writing Section i x percent of the students in Grade seven passed while 93 percent of the students in grades five and nine demonstrated Mastery. Parents who wish to consult with school officials about their children a performance on teams or any other standardized tests Are encouraged to Contact school Counselor Judy Cagle principal Don Paris or their child s teacher. Results Are As follows third Grade Wcllman-93 percent math 69 percent Reading and 56 percent writing. Stalewide-91 percent math 85 percent Reading and la percent writing. Fifth Grade Wellman-100 percent math too percen Reading and 93 percent writing. Statewide-90 percent math 87 percent Reading 82 percent writing. Seventh Grade Wellman-88 percent math too percent Reading and too percent writing. Statcwide--91 percent math 89 percent Reading and 86 percent writing. I know Many people who went by that organization and i met Many people there who Are really Nice. Quot first we had to take an Oral English test Quot Macedo said. Quot they tape that test and ask Many things in past present and future to see if you have the basics to live in a country that Speaks English. Quot they Send the tape i think to great Britain Quot Macedo said. Quot then you wait for the answer to see if you passed or not Quot Macedo said. Quot i was accepted. Quot then i had to fill out some forms Quot Macedo said. Quot you had to put in your name your family s name your interests. Quot you need to write a letter to your Host family Quot Macedo said. Quot you need to put medical information. They ask about All the diseases you have had and allergies. It s a Long Long Long after she got her Quot Seal of approval a she then had to decide which country to go to. It did t take her Long. Quot you can choose the country you want to go to Quot Macedo said. Quot i chose the United however there was a change in state. Quot at first they sent me to Minnesota Quot Macedo said. That is so bicyclist injured Justin Cody Wooley nine of Brownfield was struck by a suburban driven by Judy Elaine Rumbough also of Brownfield on wednesday in the Hoo Block e. Hester. Taken by ambulance to Brownfield regional medical Center emergency room Wooley was transferred to Lubbock s methodist Hospital. The Hospital did not release details about Wooley a condition. According to a police spokesperson Wooley who was Riding his bicycle ran a Stop sign just prior to the Accident. Quot i gained Many pounds Quot Macedo said. Quot its More bread and fast food. Fast food is much More fattening than when you prepare a meal. A Quot All right that looks Good let s try this let s eat Quot Macedo said. Quot my Mother called on the phone i dear How Are you doing i want you to come Back Here very very very thin. Quot i said mom i m sorry but i be already gained weight Quot Macedo said. Quot All the time i was on the phone she was like How is your diet going a i said i try to but its hard. Quot when my sister came Back from West Virginia she also gained weight Quot Macedo explained. Quot when i left my mom said you Are not going to eat very much. Remember Quot for the first weeks i did no to eat very much Quot Macedo said. Quot i lost some weight. Sometimes i eat very much and sometimes i done to. It s not that i eat very much. Its what i then there was the language Factor. Quot As for the language Learned Many things but i still need to learn More Quot Macedo said. Quot i understand almost everything but i think it Wall take a Long Long Long Long time for me to not have any Quot i can t pronounce the the sound Quot Macedo said. Quot it just sounds terrible. I figure it just takes More time. Quot i have studied English for six years but it s completely different and you actually need to use eng list All the time and you need to dream in English and think in English and its up to you to learn it anyway Quot Macedo said. Quot if you Don t try you re not going to survive because you need to talk in English for every Macedo will continue her discussion of English in part two. one sure the program is in place As required by the Tea Texas education association. There s a lot that we have to comply about her position As appraisal director she explained Quot about four years ago Tea started an appraisal process for All teachers including the Carcer ladder. All teachers Are appraised by two people their supervisor the principal and another appraiser. I do the elementary appraisals k through appraisals include the Type of instruction taking place the Impact on the child the motivation that is there student control and the involvement of the students. Effective teaching is stressed said Niles. Quot the teacher May be teaching her heart out but if it s not soaking in with the kids then that s not what we re looking she indicated that the school system has avoided Many of the problems with the career ladder program other schools have encountered. Crediting superintendent Don Hindley she commented Quot he s helped keep the teachers informed about what s happening on the state level so it s not a continuing Niles remarked Quot we Haven t paid this year s Carcer ladder yet because of the controversy in Austin school tax Reform. We re having to wait on that. We Haven to added new people this year but of course we still have people from previous she explained that factors coming into play with Carcer ladder eligibility Are i. Niles went on to reflect Quot it bothers me that sometimes with some parents there a a Lack of involvement. They re concerned but not involved enough in their kids there s a real satisfaction when you can see students one change she has noted Over the years is the decreasing amount of time teachers have for actual teaching due to increasing paperwork. Quot there s too Many requirements from the we still have some very dedicated effective teachers in our system Quot she said. Quot Over the years being associated with teachers students and administrators that has been the High Light. When you get to be with people and you enjoy what you re doing this is great Quot commented Niles. About Brownfield she stated Quot this was a Good Community to raise our be enjoyed it Here and we do plan to Niles and her husband have one daughter Nan Crowson a seventh Grade science teacher in Belton. Niles is Active at first United methodist Church having served As organist for 13 years until her resignation last fall. A member of the Delta Kappa Gamma chapter for women educators she is also a member of several professional organizations. She said that her Active lifestyle has not allowed for Many hobbies beside music adding Quot now that i m retiring i m going to find things that i d like to do. I d like to make a quilt. I be never done that. We had them at Home when i was growing up so that a one thing i know i want to said Niles Quot now that Well have free time Well possibly do some travelling. My husband s a Fisherman so Well fish travel and go to m sure it won t be a Boring Possession nets two Billy Dewayne Jones 28, of Brownfield was arrested by local police officers wednesday May 30, on charges of delivery of a controlled substance marijuana. Arrested in a separate Case wednesday was Gabriel Garza 28, of Brownfield who was charged with delivery of marijuana Possession of drug paraphernalia and Possession of a controlled substance marijuana. Daniel Soliz was arrested wednesday by officers for unlawfully carrying a weapon pistol and on a warrant from the Alice police department for . Stolen vehicle.
