Brazilian exchange student in Brownfield overcomes homesickness

June 3 1990 Brownfield report highlights Vivianne Macedo a Brazilian Youth for Understanding exchange student staying with Steve and Bonnie Metcalf family. She recalls initial homesickness and tears while adjusting to life in the United States now expressing appreciation for learning how people live and think. Macedo daughter of Zedyd and Vanda Macedo of Copacabana Rio de Janeiro. sister Vanessa also an ex exchange student.

Brownfield educator Fern Niles retires after 36 years in district

Kelly Sinclair notes Fern Niles, Brownfield ISD elementary curriculum and appraisal director, ends a 39 year career in education with 36 years in Brownfield. Born in Oklahoma, she and husband Clifford start teaching careers in Wellington before moving to Brownfield. Niles taught music, then third, first, and second grades, shifted to remedial reading under Title 1, and led federal programs before her six year director role.

Five Cubs named to 3-AAA All-District honors

Brownfield High School baseball's Lupe Davila Eddy Garza Gerald Gonzales Andy Martinez earned First Team honors with Senior Junior Rodriguez getting Honorable Mention. The Cubs finished 12-10 overall and 2-4 in district play. Davila led with a .468 average four homers 20 RBIs four doubles seven steals. Martinez hit .391 with 10 RBIs and four stolen bases. Gonzales closed out his BHS season with strong defense and offense.

May Rain Falls Short Of County Averages

Terry County records 1.05 inches of May rainfall versus a 2.53 inch May average. Heaviest rain fell on the second with .92 inches, plus .13 on the third and a trace on the 30th. Temperatures traced highs in the 90s on 11 days, including 98 on the 26th, and lows in the 30s once, with a 39 on the fourth.
