Problems With Cotton Stands Are Discussed

Reports indicate unfavorable conditions for cotton seedling emergence and survival across the cotton belt planted after April 1. West Texas Oklahoma and New Mexico producers worry about slow seedling emergence due to rapid weather changes since mid April. Weather shifts lowered soil temperatures and increased heat loss at night reducing growth. high quality seed with fungicide protection offered better survival though seed treatments alone were often insufficient. Preemergence decay and postemergence root rot noted. factors include soil prep planting depth moisture loss and high winds with blowing sand. Some stands vary within fields and even within disease control plots due to rapid drying after planting. in covering soil fungicides improved stands versus untreated checks.
