Holiday policing slows as minor wrecks and arrests rise

A series of minor incidents and drunkenness arrests marked the police beat this holiday period. Wrecks occurred on North Second at 6 19 p m involving a 1967 Pontiac owned by Willie Helm and a 1962 Chevrolet pickup driven by Leon Clay Webster. A second collision happened at South Pecos and Warren at 12 30 a m involving a 1961 Chevrolet sedan owned by Ronnie Clyde Glover and a 1967 Chevrolet driven by Harold Lewis. Pro prowlers were reported at the La Fonda Motel at 10 45 p m and vandalism with obscene writings on signs belonging to Charlie Price. A dog bite incident involved Santos Galvan's dog. D Vazzi, Ted Hayes, Jack Patton, and Glyndon Stockton were arrested or cited for drunkenness with fines ranging from 25 to 39 50 dollars.

Cleanest Alley Winners Revealed in Town Campaign

Brownfield Garden Club announced winners of the Cleanest Alley In Town after a weeks long drive by Terry County Chamber of Commerce. Winners hail from the 500 block of East Buckley and East Reppto with residents named including George Weiss and L.R. Shepard. Honorable mentions cover the 700 block East Reppto and East Buckley Truett Flache Bob Duman Sam Privitt W.E. Feltner and Lee Brownfield and other blocks.

Dudley Farr to General Office role change at Brown Field

George Ater of San Angelo will become western division traffic supervisor at Brown field replacing Dudley Farr effective June 4. Farr moves to traffic equipment engineer west south at General Offices in San Angelo. Ater, with long General Telephone tenure, will assist districts in staffing, training, procedures, and traffic records. Farr led Brown field traffic supervision since 1963 and previously served in San Angelo. he started as an installer and rose to traffic engineer. They plan to relocate by end of May.

Gavel Gift Honors Jesse T. George by Ben Barnes

Speaker Ben Barnes presented Texas Representative Jesse T. George with an engraved gavel recognizing his service as vice chairman of the School Districts Committee in the 60th Legislature. Barnes praised George for long hours of work benefiting his district and state. George also serves on Education Motor Traffic Agriculture and Constitutional Amendments committees.

Tornado sightings and storm damage sweep county

Strong storms moved through the county Sunday bringing hail and at least six tornado sightings between Gomez and Brownfield at about 5 30 p m though none touched the ground. Civil defense director Lewis Simmonds credited citizen reports and listed responders including J W Tiny Nelson Phil Thompson Ted Jones and my Sikes from the Terry County Sheriff’s Department. A fire at Texas Compress and Warehouse injured no one but damaged about 27 bales of cotton and was blamed on lightning.

County hearings eye expanded deer season and prairie chicken test

Sportsmen, landowners and wildlife biologists meet county hearings under Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept to discuss broad deer season expansion in 1967 and other topics. In Edwards Plateau and Panhandle areas, proposals include early antlerless deer season, January extensions, a two day prairie chicken season in Hemphill Lipscomb and Wheeler, and shifting noudad sheep season to January in Palo Duro Canyon counties. A Possum Kingdom walleyes trial is proposed though fish have been scarce since 1964.

Registration Opens for Head Start at Oak Grove

Head Start registration starts today at Oak Grove Elementary for first graders entering in September. Pre-register between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on today or Friday, bringing birth certificates and immunization records if possible. Jim Hensley notes pre-registration eases the first day for teachers and aides. the listed teachers include Mines, Ruby Arnold, Edna Best, Dora Ford, Nell Evans, Irene Rieck and Phyllis Taylor.

Boys Staters To Be Honored Here

Dinner honors region Boys State delegates from Terry County including Kirk Brown Roy Cato Randy Douglas Gary Jones Benny Marrow and Keith Martin The 1967 Texas American Legion Boys State runs June 10 17 at the University of Texas in Austin with 51 boys sponsored by the American Legion Two Boys Nation representatives will follow in July in Washington DC The event introduces youth to government functions and citizen duties and includes a concurrent Girls State dinner and invites past Boys and Girls State participants.
