County Judge W. T. McKinney proclaims July 20 26 as Farm Safety Week at the request of Terry County Farm Bureau president Billy Timmons. The local farm organization coordinates county activities to curb rising farm accident deaths and urges use of safety tools like seat belts fire extinguishers SMV emblems and tractor roll guards.
The Brownfield business community largely ignores President Nixon's call for a Monday holiday to honor the moon landing. Pioneer Natural Gas Company will close. federal offices shut. county and city offices stay open. no mail delivery. several local offices including ASCS SCS FHA draft board and Farm Bureau take the day off.
Local officials arrested five men for being drunk in public and released them after paying total fines of 150 dollars. One man faced a breach of peace charge and paid 25 dollars to gain release. Juan Maria Longoria is held in the city jail on a possession charge. Eddie Lee Jones was also arrested. Turn To Page 13.
The Brownfield Zoning Board recommends two zoning changes with a public hearing set for 9 a.m. August 7 at the City Council meeting. One change would rezone Sam Houtchens property on Fir Street to C-1 for certain businesses, the other would rezone Dr. George Sibley’s lots on Hester Street to R-2 to allow duplexes.
Terry County commissioners waded through a 22 item agenda lasting until 5 p.m. Several visitors urged action on herbicide regulation for hormone type chemicals after crop damage. The board approved state and county actions, bonds, employee pay, and facility repairs while budgeting transfers and agent convention attendance.
Levelland crushed Seagraves 16-0 and Whiteface Sun- down beat Ropesville 7-4 in Thursday action. Brownfield won 5-0 over Morton and Denver City defeated Plains 10-0. Semifinals set Levelland vs Whiteface Sun- down and Brownfield vs Denver City.
Sharon McIlroy age fourteen and Gary nine operate a Snow Cone shop at 511 West Hill while their Dr. and Mrs. Howard McIlroy supervise. Gary does not handle money. A Moonlight Madness promotion drew local Chamber members in red shirts to visit participating merchants.
Absentee voting at the county clerk's office moves slowly with only two ballots cast at press time. Voters may cast absentee ballots on nine proposed constitutional amendments for the Aug. 5 election. Amendment Two on the Texas Water Plan draws particular attention in West Texas. Early voting urged for those away August 5, with absentee voting continuing until 5 p.m. August 1.
Mrs. Tim Faulkenberry says her life centers on raising her family working in her church and serving the community. She was raised in the country and is a graduate of Texas Women's University.
