Eight-town Little League Opens On Porridge Weather

Rainy season humor aside the eight-town Little League tournament starts at 2 p.m. today while the City Tennis Tournament begins at 5 p.m. Both events run three days as Brownfield fans gear up for two sports using white balls. RR Johnny Isaacs leads local efforts as he heads to Cowtown for a week at the Institute for Organization Management.

13 Wrecks On Rural Highways

The Texas Highway Patrol reports 13 rural accident crashes in Terry County in June causing 2 deaths and 13 injuries with $6,735 in property damage. For the first six months of 1969 Terry County shows 44 accidents, 7 killed, 29 injured and $38,025 in damage.

Six Local Boys Leave For Camp

The Salvation Army hosts 800 Texas boys at Camp Hoblitzelle near Dallas this summer. Six Brownfield youths R L Brown David Howell Raymond Perry Jr Elwayne Carouth Timothy Bennett and David Martin left by bus on July 12 for the weeklong stay through July 19. Camp chair Graham Smith reported more than 3 000 campers will enjoy the facilities.

Three Terry County FFA Boys To Receive Awards

Three Terry County FFA boys will receive top honors at the 41st annual state FFA convention in Fort Worth. Ronnie Hartman of Brownfield and Barry Caswell and Gerald Caswell of Meadow are named winners in separate categories, with Hartman earning Area Star American Farmer, Barry Caswell Star Chapter Farmer of Texas, and Gerald Caswell a crop farming proficiency award. Hartman, 19, brings livestock showing, leadership roles, extensive farming expansion, and farm assets to the recognition. Barry Caswell, 16, plans college study in agriculture and holds multiple FFA and national association memberships with a pork and crop program. Gerald Caswell is the Meadow pair’s other honoree, continuing a family farming lineage with crop and livestock activity.

Trustees OK New Tax Rate for Brownfield ISD

Brownfield Independent School District trustees approved a 1969-70 budget of 4 168 907 and set a new tax rate of 1 50 for maintenance and 50 cents for service totalling 2 per 100 valuation at 60 percent of actual value. The 18 cent rise from 1 82 follows years of no increases and funds the new high school bond and salary raises.

Absentee Voting Under Way in Terry County

Absentee voting on nine amendments to the Texas Constitution began Wednesday at the county clerk's office in the Terry County Courthouse. Voting continues until 5 p.m. August 1, and Aug. 6 is the election day. Voters away on vacation are urged to use absentee ballots.
