Transfers Denied by School Board Says Superintendent

Several requests for student transfers between districts were denied at the regular school board meeting. Superintendent W. O. Caraway announced that only two letters were received about transfers from Wellman and Union, marking a first in the board's history.

Transfer Requests Follow Federal Court Order in Tyler

Caraway noted 10 students wished to transfer from Wellman with 2 approved and 8 denied while 8 sought transfer from Union with 3 approved. The board followed the standard procedure and cited a 1973 federal court order handed down at Tyler as the reason.

Plains and Brownfield district transfer dispute discussed

Trustees heard that Plains ISD would accept transfers only for elementary grades while above seventh grade transfers were restricted. Citizens John Curtis and Tommy Elmore argued that moving into Plains or nearby land could allow continued schooling, seeking a legal way to adjust residency and transfer eligibility for their children.

Too Wet To Plan Hinders Planting In Brownfield

During a Tuesday meeting the Democratic executive board unanimously named Pete Cramer as candidate for Justice of the Peace. The vacancy follows the death of George Steele. Republican chairman James Evans was away, leaving uncertain if a Republican candidate will be offered in November.

Plane Crash Fatal To Two In Colorado

Two men died in a July 9 light plane crash near Stapleton Airport Aurora Colorado. Jimmie Knowles of Brownfield piloted the craft and Paul Lynn Christian of Lubbock died with him. The two were en route to Lubbock when high winds may have contributed to the crash which also struck a house and several cars. Funeral services for Knowles were held at Crescent Hills Church of Christ with interment in Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Christian’s services were at Turkey Church of Christ with burial in Turkey Cemetery. Survivors for Knowles include a widow a son and two daughters along with his parents and siblings. Christian is survived by a widow a daughter and his mother.
