Tax Assessing and Collecting in Terry County Focus

J D Akers, Terry County's 13th tax assessor collector, took over June 1 to oversee about 445000 in county taxes and 126000 in state taxes yearly. He aims to modernize with a tax accounting machine and leads a three deputy staff including Mrs. Hamilton. The office covers motor vehicle registrations and Meadow and Union school taxes, with property valuation at 32720316 and a state and county tax take near 600000 annually.

Teachers Enrolled in Summer Session from Terry County

Eleven Terry County teachers and school administrators are enrolled at Texas Tech for the first summer session. The group is part of 453 educators from six states and 113 Texas communities. Brownfield attendees include Kenneth Frazier Wes Hicks Jr and others. Meadow educators include Joe Burleson James Stone and Viviana Stone.

Caution Urged Fleahoppers Reported Across Cotton Fields

Weather remains favorable for cotton growth and fruiting though plants are smaller for late dates. Aphids are present in scattered fields with light infestations. thrips vary from light to medium. Fleahoppers appear in larger numbers as cotton reaches fruiting, with light overall damage but notable outbreaks in Terry Mitchell and Yoakum counties.

State reports 60 abnormal findings from mobile X-ray program

A mobile X-ray unit evaluated 1,640 Brownfield and Terry residents during its stay in the state. Nurse Viola Simmonds of the South Plains Health Unit says 60 abnormal findings were reported, and she is responsible for following through and encouraging treatment.

A letter from 60 Brownfield Scouts recounts a cross country trip ending at the Fourth National Jamboree in Valley Forge. Youth Center Formed For Terry County High Students

A year round youth center program is established for Terry County high schoolers with participation from Wellman Union Meadow Brownfield districts. It will meet at the park party house weekly, directed by Mr. and Mrs. Coy Jones, and governed by a student body. Members pay $1 annually.

Robert Becker begins duties as the new vocational agriculture teacher on July 1 in Brownfield replacing Wes Hicks Jr who becomes West Ward principal. Becker a Texas Tech graduate taught two years at Loop and three years at Flower Grove. He is pursuing a master's degree at Tech, married with a one year old daughter and will live at 1001 East Sons.

Youth Bitten by Black Widow on Fishing Trip

Delton Grove of Route 1 was bitten by a black widow spider near Paint Rock while with his family. The bite occurred on the foot as they prepared to return home. A stalled car delayed care, and he was treated at San Angelo hospital overnight then required additional treatment at Treadaway-Danell Hospital.

Car Crash Claims Brownfield Man Life Near Farm Road 2066

A one car accident 7 miles north on Farm Road 2066 at 7 25 pm Thursday killed 38 year old William Ellis Heathcoat and critically injured 44 year old J T Renfro. Authorities say a blown right front tire caused the high speed crash into a cotton field. Heathcoat died on arrival at Treadaway Daniels Hospital. Renfro remained in critical condition Saturday morning but improving.

County PCG Directors To Session in Lubbock

Brownfield and Terry County plains cotton growers R D Jones Sr and Charles S Kersh of Plains Cotton Growers Inc attend a Lubbock session to review cotton bills before Congress and possible 1958 allotment changes. The meeting will discuss freezing Texas cotton allotments at the 1957 level and includes other PCG directors.

Moore Ten Winner At Swine Showing

Gary Moore son of Mr and Mrs H N Moore of 711 North Second won the top prize a purebred Berkshire gilt at the West Texas Swine Breeders conference at Texas Tech during Wednesday and Thursday. The gilt was awarded for scoring highest in judging six classes of breeding and fat swine. Other Terry County competitors included Glenn Chesshir Buster Chambers and James Willis. They were accompanied by Wenzel and instructors Robert Becker and Walter Meyer.

Terry County Babe Ruth Tourney Team Named For District Playoffs

Fifteen players and two alternates form Terry County's tourney team to compete in District 2 at Levelland on Thursday and Friday. The Tigers Red Sox and Cardinal squads provide the core while the schedule shifts to accommodate the Levelland tournament with a possible August 5 final game.

Terryettes To Meet Seminole Girls Here For Softball Game

Brownfield senior girls softball team will meet Seminole at 7 p.m. Monday in Little League Park. Brownfield junior girls will play Meadow at 6:30 p.m. Preceding the game, Brownfield plans a local women’s softball team if enough interest exists. Florence Parker, Terryettes coach, said their first Seminole game showed errors but promised stronger play Monday.

Four officers to be installed at Brownfield IOOF Lodge 530

Four officers to serve Brownfield IOOF Lodge 530 for the last half of 1957 will be installed at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Led by Bob Long of Plains, District Deputy Grand Master, the team will install Marion Murphy as Noble Grand, Bob Mason as Vice-Grand, R. B. Perry as secretary, and Marion Stone as treasurer.
