Dill wins Brownfield Invitational in close final

18-year-old Terry Dill of Muleshoe defeats John Paul Cain of Sweetwater 4 and 3 to claim the fifth annual Brownfield Country Club invitational title. Dill previously won at Lakeside Country Club and Odessa Key Club Junior titles this year.

German Exchange Student to Spend 10 Weeks in Brownfield

Rev. Ralph O'Dell of Brownfield Rotary describes Paul Arnold of Beuel Germany as a future Texan during a 10 week stay sponsored by the International Research Fund Inc New York. Arnold, 27, will arrive from Idlewild July 18 and live one week each with John Kendrick Sam Privitt Al Muldrow and Burton Hackney at listed addresses.

Brownfield Hosts World Travelers Group from Dallas

Hospitality initiative by Brownfield continues as Association for World Travel Exchange brings 9 travelers from Dallas for a Sunday arrival. The 1989 group includes one Brazilian one Finn four Germans and two English with a luncheon and area tours planned. Wage Survey Underway for Hoe Hands in Terry

A prevailing wage survey to determine hoe hand wages is being conducted July through July 12 in Terry. The U.S. Department of Labor will notify the Brownfield office of Texas Employment Commission of findings by telegrams to be posted in the courthouse, Post Office and Meadow Tokio post offices.

Crimemobile to Visit Brownfield Courthouse Display

Texas Law Enforcement Foundation will display the Crimemobile in Brownfield on Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the east side of the courthouse. Sheriff James Fulford says city police and the sheriff’s office will assist. Mayor Arlie Lawrimore declares Crimemobile Day to promote understanding of law enforcement science and methods.

Brownfield July Clearance Sale Draws Big Traffic

Weldon Callaway notes Brownfield has been quiet as residents take vacations or return home. Collins wraps up a July clearance sale with strong traffic over three days. NEWS Winner Sherrell Lindsey Tops Sub Contest

Sherrell Lindsey son of Mr and Mrs W E Lindsey of 1012 South Fourth won the NEWS subscription contest with 2455 points and a $60 check from Publisher Curtis Sterling. Jerry Littlefield placed second with 2345 points and $45. Jer rell Collis was third with 960 points and $25. The contest ran through May and June with points for new subscribers and renewals. Sterling estimated about 150 new subscribers joined NEWS Rolls during the event.

Tucker Diversifies Crops Across 490 Acres In Terry County

Winfred Tucker farms 490 acres north west of here and grows cotton alfalfa five grass varieties several legumes and hybrid grain sorghums. He hosts 25 range grass varieties for the county agent and credits erosion control with improving land productivity since 1953. Tucker notes alfalfa hay and seed potential but cites low hay prices affecting returns. He was named 1955 Terry County Farmer of the Year.

Farm income boost seen from hog farming in Texas

Ter ry County farmers were urged to expand hog production as a path to steadier income. C D Adams a Seagraves Purina dealer and Gaines County Swine Breeders official said South Plains farmers are in a strong hog market position aided by year round Fort Worth prices and local feed sources. The Four County Agriculture Committee breakfast in Lamesa drew about 35 attendees including bankers, teachers, agents, and government workers.

Brownfield Kiwanis Plan Kiddie Park Near Swim Pool

Brownfield Kiwanis members outlined a Kiddie Park project southwest of the Terry County swimming pool with an estimated cost of 1650 to 1700 dollars. They will sell $2 shares starting July 18 to fund the Kiddie Park Corporation and expect completion by October with six playground pieces including two swings a merry go round slide three see saws and a 12 by 6 foot monkey maze.
