County Eyes Hospital Bonds as Doctors Shortage Grows

A seven man committee appointed by the Commissioners Court reviews possible hospital expansion and more doctors for Terry County. Judge Chesshir explains bond elections would require a property tax increase to fund permanent improvements, while McNutt cites state figures showing a shortfall of five to six doctors for about 16 000 to 17 000 residents.

Solons Greet Scouts On Excursion To Nation's Capitol

Fifty Brownfield youths and 280 South Plains Boy Scouts toured Washington before the National Jamboree. They saw the Capitol in session and met Senators Lyndon Johnson and Ralph Yarborough and Congressman George Mahon. The group visited Arlington Cemetery to view the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Apparent Greek proverb frames tough week for Brownfield bootleggers

Lubbock authorities seized two liquor loads around Brownfield. Don Earl McCormick 20 and Ola Dean Chew 18 were arrested after a Sunday morning pickup. McCormick charged with illegal transportation and Chew with illegal possession of liquor. Kiwanians plan a Brownfield fundraiser at local businesses with stock sales over several days and locations.

Theft of two trailer wheels and tires in Wellman incident

J R Thomas reported two trailer wheels and tires stolen from a fuel trailer near Wellman. Sheriff Fulford and Deputy Gordon arrested two men nearby after a motorist assisted, finding the missing items between the suspects' seats. The rapid response followed a 5 a.m. discovery and a 15 minute turnaround. Brownfield set for a Tuesday special election on a dog at large ordinance with a 5 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. voting window at City Hall. The measure mirrors Lubbock’s and would require a $1 dog license and leash rules to curb rabies risk and property damage.

News Carriers Set for Three-Day Lake Trip

Seventeen MEWS carriers and seven adults depart this morning for a three day fishing excursion at Lake Thomas near Snyder. The group will return around noon Saturday, with this trip the first in a series planned by the NEWS.

Babe Ruth League to Name Queen on Aug 5

The 1957 Babe Ruth League queen will be named Aug. 5 at Lions Ball Park. The ceremony honors the six girls who have sold the most tickets this week for two games that night featuring the Tigers versus Cardinals, followed by a fathers versus league officials and coaches game with mothers officiating the finale. Contestants: Claudia Chesshir, Virginia Cooper, Barbara Kirschner, Kay Howell, Linda Sue Franklin, and Carolyn Cary.

Brownfield FFA delegates head to state meeting in Fort Worth

A six member Brownfield Future Farmers of America chapter leaves Tuesday for the annual state FFA meeting in Fort Worth. Walter Meyer heads the delegation with four members to receive Lone Star Farmer degrees and one student a $250 scholarship. Wesley Britton will receive the degree in absentia after an appendectomy. Other honorees include Bill Walker Mike Smith and Johnny O Neal.

Pioneer Farmer A W Fore dies in Texas at 79

A W Fore, 79, a pioneer Terry County resident, died at 9 30 p m Saturday after a long illness in Tread away Daniell Hospital. Fore farmed in the county 31 years and moved to Meadow 10 years ago. Born in Prescott Arkansas on January 27 1878 he married Buford Ellen Waddle in 1856. He was a Baptist Church member. Funeral services were incomplete.

Terry 4H Members Attend Three Day Electric Camp

Six Terry 4H members and sponsors attend a three day camp in Mackenzie State Park Lub bock to study electrical crafts for farm life. The camp sponsored by Southwestern Public Service Co. opened Wednesday and will close Friday per assistant county agent Bob Etheredge. Attendees include Jeannie Solsherry and Linda Hen Lee.

Plains man Odis L. Lusk dies after heart attack at work

A 48 year old Plains resident Odis L. Lusk died about 6 p.m. Monday at Treadaway-Daniell Hospital after a heart attack at a construction site. Funeral services are pending with word from his Air Force abroad son. Survivors include his wife Janita Fay Hague and several children and siblings.
