Brownfield is on pace to top one million dollars in 1957 building activity per the University of Texas Bureau of Business Research. Through June 30 the city records 708 thousand dollars. January and February saw per capita construction dollars of 24.02 and 29.54 respectively, with May–June permitting 35 projects totaling varied investments at City Hall.

22-year-old Joe Dale Doak reports Sorghum Almum grown near Meadow shows erosion control promise and seed crop potential. He notes no erosion on the grassed land during heavy rains while cotton land suffered. Doak, who farms 160 acres, is expanding plantings and trialing cattle feed, with 13 more acres planted this spring in cooperation with Terry Soil Conservation District. He harvested about 1,000 pounds of seed per acre last fall and expects another seed crop next month.

Shortage of Hoe Hands and Tractor Drivers Reported
Aubrey T. Jones of the Texas Employment Commission Brownfield office says a shortage of hoe hands and tractor drivers has developed. Immediate work for about 740 farm hands in Terry and Yoakum counties is available, with peak hiring a few weeks away. He notes a rise in nonfarm workers aiding TEC placements from 243 to 374 in the first half of the previous year.
