Miss South Plains of 1962 crowned at Brownfield pageant

Caroline Stowe won the first Miss South Plains contest at Brownfield High School auditorium under Jaycees auspices. LeNora Turner and Valdene Garner finished second and third. about 400 attended. Stowe, a Brownfield High School graduate, plans Baylor study in music and will represent Terry County in the Miss Texas finals in Fort Worth.

Big Friday Parade Opens Rodeo Week in Brownfield

A large Friday parade will start rodeo week in Brownfield with amateur acts at 7 30 p m at the rodeo grounds and more features on Friday and Saturday All events are sponsored by the Terry County Sheriff s Posse At least nine posses will form the parade leaving the intersection of Levelland and Lubbock Highways at 5 p m tomorrow Local floats include Jack Christie A T Pickett Used Car Lot and others Parade participants are urged to be at the starting point between 4 and 5 p m for proper alignment The program includes bareback bronc riding calf roping team tying bull riding bulldogging calf scramble and an open girls barrel race Trophy awards accompany each show The event offers admission of 1 for adults 50 cents for children A barn dance by Jimmy Mackey and his All Stars follows the rodeo performances An Apaloosa horse show is slated Saturday at 11 a m open to registered Apaloosas }

Brownfield Hosts Fourth of July Beauty Pageant

The Brownfield Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored the South Plains Beauty Pageant held last night as city business paused for the holiday. Most residents used the Fourth of July to visit nearby lakes, while offices and stores reopened today with normal activity resuming after the holiday.

Brownfield Man Pleads Guilty to Theft Over Fifty

E. W. Tillman of Brownfield pleaded guilty to theft over $50 and was sentenced to two years in the State penitentiary at Huntsville.

Terry County 4-H Cotton Grains Tests Open Signups

More than two dozen Terry County 4-H members have signed up for the annual cotton and grain sorghum production contests with a July 13 deadline set by the county agent. Prizes will be awarded to top dryland and irrigated entrants. interested contestants are urged to contact the county agent by next Friday.

Army Enlistees Announced Here

SFC Bill Jones the local Army recruiter announced two 3 year enlistments from Terry County. Mickey Joe Cabe of Route 5 Brownfield and Jerald Wayne Lary of Route 1 Brownfield will undergo eight weeks of basic training at Ft Leonard Wood Missouri and receive a 14 day leave before regular duty or further training.

City Delegation Views Budding CRMWA Project Groundbreaking

A Texas city delegation witnessed the Vista Point groundbreaking for the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority dam project near Sanford. The 322 mile navoduct will serve Amarillo Pampa Brownfield Slaton Lamesa O’Donnell Lubbock Plainview and Level land with water by 1969.

Area Group Backs Delta Farming Methods In Mississippi Trip

A group of 20 Terry County farmers and ag men toured the Mississippi Delta observing flame cultivation and lateral oiling. They visited Memphis and Clarksdale before reaching Jackson. The High Plains Research Foundation at Halfway near Plainview pursues studies on these methods and plans an August field day to report findings. Participants included H. L King, Ross Black, Max Proffitt, Merlin Speed, Val Garner, Kenneth Tuttle and others.

Thefts Top City Police Blotter

The blotter records three thefts and one malicious mischief case since Sunday. A vacant house at 921 West Lake lost two auto transmissions and tools valued about 100 dollars between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday, owned by Wayne Hall. A license plate and mud flaps were stolen from a truck 20 miles southwest of Seminole. A tire and wheel valued at 670x15 white sidewall were reported missing from a used car lot at 818 North D. Malicious mischief involved vandalism to a 1962 auto’s rear view window at Ed's Texaco station between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday behind Brownfield Apartments.

Youth Destroys Auto Windows On Courthouse Row

A 16-year-old Brownfield youth used a tire tool in a fit of anger to smash two left side windows of a 1950 Plymouth sedan parked east of the courthouse causing $20 damage. The owner, Joe R. Corisales of 301 West Broadway, said he would file charges. Bond set at $1,000 for each youth.

350 Signatures Needed for Brownfield Integration Vote

The Brownfield Board of Education seeks about 350 more signatures to trigger an integration election. A petition coupon appears on page 4, section 1, with 20 percent of eligible voters required. Signing the coupon authorizes the election, not endorsement of integration.

Miss Lubbock Pageant names new winner and runnerups

Patti Ayers of Corpus Christi wins Miss Lubbock with Zoe Etta Smith of Lubbock as first runnerup and Nadyne Faulkenberry, a Texas Tech senior from Route 1 Sea Craves, placed second runnerup. Faulkenberry, daughter of Mr and Mrs W C Faulkenberry, has brown eyes and hair, a 35 24 36 figure, and performed trick twirling as her talent.
