Brownfield Guardsmen Mark Halfway Point In Training

Brownfield's Battery B of the 2nd Howitzer Battalion marks the halfway point of a major Fort Polk summer encampment. The 36th Texas Infantry Division, nearly 9,000 strong, trains under new leaders Major Gen. Selden Simpson and Brig. Gen. Ralph Krieger. Battery B, with 3 officers and 50 men, operates 155 mm howitzers and conducts chemical and radiological warfare training alongside standard maneuvers.

Solons Ok R-2 Change At Meeting

Brownfield city council approved a zoning change from R-2 to C-2 for the old football field despite a local objection from Dennis Lilly. A blinker light at Ave B and Cardwell was tabled for study after safety concerns and shrubbery removal were discussed. A loading area request for Anderson Electric at 711 W Main was denied due to alley access. The field will be offered for sale by the Brownfield School Board with terms requiring a C-2 rating.

Thrilling rodeo opener dazzles crowd at Terry County event

Saddle bronc action drew cheers as only two riders scored in broncs and two in bull riding at the Terry County Sheriff’s Posse rodeo. Cochran County led parade honors with 213 points, followed by Petersburg-Riding Club and Dawson County Posse. An Apaloosa show and barn dances capped two-day festivities with injuries minor and competition lasting into Saturday.

Water usage declines in city amid June rainfall

City water board reports May usage at 75,009,000 gallons dropping to 68,640,300 gallons in June thanks to above average rainfall. June daily average for 3,313 users was 2,288,100 gallons while May saw 2,419,645 gallons used by 3,206 users. Last year’s two period comparison showed a larger drop of 12,676,100 gallons in June over May.

Terry County farmers report good crop conditions with about 152000 acres planted. They hope for two to three inches of rainfall to improve underground moisture and support a fifth straight 100000-bale-plus cotton year despite last year's record 175200 bales.
