Jerry Jackson argues for renaming the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show Cowtown so as to avoid the insult of “fat.” He proposes forming a personal joint name change committee to push for the new title Pleasingly Plump Stock Show. The plea targets changing public perception of the event’s branding.
Brownfield School Board sets April 3 for filling Places 4 and 5. Filing deadline is March 3 with in-person applicants at Brownfield High School Business Office. Election hours 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Officers retained include Presiding Judge Jake Geron and Judges Ellington Nicholson Moreman. Board approves baseball park fence upgrade with Babe Ruth League and City of Brownfield, bid by Cyclone Fence Co. at 895 dollars. Curriculum director Dr. Posey notes enthusiasm for modern math program and plans parent courses. enrollment up 44 students from last year.
The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual banquet Thursday February 11 at 7 p.m. in the Directors' Room after a morning meeting led by outgoing president Harry Elam. Board members Leo Holmes, Woody Swaringen, Jake Geron, and Jerry Jackson discussed ticket sales, decorations, arrangements, food, publicity and printing.
Funeral services for J. V. Helm were conducted at 2 p.m. in Brownfield Memorial Chapel with Rev. Clarence Weiderhaf officiating. Burial followed at Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Helm, 40, died on arrival Monday at Brownfield General Hospital after a heart attack while working on a house site. He was WWII veteran, American Legion member, and supervisor at Helm Construction Firm. Surviving are his wife, daughter Hazel Short, father C. H. Helm, brothers Willie and Karlvin, and two grandsons.
Brownfield’s City Council will convene Thursday morning at 9 o clock in City Hall. Mayor C. E. Ross is slated to preside over the session.
Brownfield police and Terry County sheriff reports show a busy period with most arrests for drinking violations and DWI. Notable cases include Aubrey V. Hillbrunner awaiting trial on a DWI and Lillian Olive Bishop held on a DWI charge in Lubbock, with multiple other intoxication related arrests and property thefts under investigation. A service station break in at Shamrock No 2 yielded about 150 dollars in cash and checks plus minor losses.
Anny Stevens leads the West Texas Babe Ruth League as president at Brownfield. Officers elected include Dillie Kelley as vice president Dale Brown as secretary treasurer Leonard Ware umpire in chief and David Nicholson as assistant secretary treasurer. Carrol Collier named general chairman of the state tournament set for Brownfield in August Lt Richardson chairs the by laws committee and Mike Richardson becomes groundskeeper. A local best two of three baseball tournament is planned for this summer under Brownfield Babe Ruth guidance.
A full time night jailer is now on duty at the Terry County Sheriff's Office following authorization by the Commissioners Court. The new 24 hour status allows citizens to contact the office at night and the attendant will take information and dispatch units as needed.
The Terry County office reports slow issuance of poll tax receipts and exemptions under J. D. Akers. As of yesterday 1,250 had been issued versus 4,645 in the previous election year, with the deadline moved to January 29 due to Sunday January 31.
Terry County Young Farmers Association holds a meeting at 7 30 PM in Brownfield High School Agriculture Building. Bob Sewell will present a weather talk as president James Willis notes the program highlights the weather role in farming and a report on the Dallas convention attended by 30 county members. Richard Whittington will be introduced as the new ASC office manager. Refreshments follow. members urged to attend and bring a guest.
Brownfield Kiwanis Club meeting featured Craig Wilkerson a local CPA who reviewed changes from last year and tax revisions. The session also designated pancake supper committee members Bill Cope chaired with John Williams Melton Stewart Stanley Miller and Tommy Johnson. Guests Charlie Robison and Larry Thurman attended and future meetings will move to the Seleta Jane Clubhouse.
