Outstanding Young Man and Farmer To Be Revealed Jan 25
The Brownfield Jaycees will reveal the Outstanding Young Man and the Outstanding Young Farmer of Terry County for 1957 at a banquet on January 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the new junior high cafeteria. Tickets cost $1.75, and Jaycees are selling them. The 17th annual program began in 1940 with Ray Christopher chosen, followed by Lynn Nelson, J. W. Burnett, CC Primi, and Herb Chesshir among others.

Pay Hikes Approved for County Officials in Regular Session
County commissioners approved salary increases for several officials in a regular session. District clerk Eldora White rose to 195 dollars monthly, treasurer C L Jones to 495, justice Lonnie Rhyne to 280.90, and constable Roy Moreman to 006.05. A 14 per year cemetery upkeep budget was set for Union Foster and Gomer, brownfield and Meadow budgets unchanged. Discussion focused on hiring a war engineering firm for the new airport four miles east of Brownfield, with no action pending a joint meeting with city council. Present were Commissioners Tankersley Stephenson Burett, County Judge Chesshir, and County Clerk Yaniel.

A survey by Kenneth Burtell and H. L. King shows most cotton producers favor establishing a sub-classing office southwest of Labock. They mailed over 90 cards to farmers ginners and others. 35a farmers approved while eight disapproved with total acreage involved at about 1996 acres.

Outstanding Young Farmer program notes winners and selects 1955 contender
Jaycees and offer judges canvassed nominations from groups and clubs. Nominees must be 35 or younger. Winfred Tucker, a farmer near Needmore Community, was chosen last February as the 1955 Outstanding Young Farmer, the first in the program.

Rites Held For Victims Of Car Truck Collision
Funeral services were held for two Terry County residents killed in a January 9 car truck crash on Leinesa Highway, 59 miles from Brownfield. Lucille Ward Lucas, 21, and Forest Rinehart, 41, were eulogized in Brownfield area churches with multiple pallbearers and survivors including Lucas’s sister and Rinehart’s family. Burial was at Terry County Memorial Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home direction. Rinehart, a Comanche County native who moved to Terry County nine years ago, had farmed west of Brownfield and served in the US Army Reserve. He attended Northside Baptist and was a 1944 Terry County resident since moving with his parents from Comanche County.
